hi. i had my 18 week scan today, where they check the brain, vital organs, measure bones etc. everything was perfect EXCEPT that there is fluid (urine) in his kidneys. she gave me the medical term for it and was going to write it down ( i left in a daze without it and will call after work tomorrow). anyway she said it was somewhat common in boys and that it had to do with the opening of the ureter pushing the urine back in to the kidneys. she did say there was plenty of amniotic fluid which is great as that menas he is urinating ok. i am going to be monitored and have to wait a whole month to see if its getting better/worse...whatever the case. there are a few scenarios ( one being surgery after birth) but i am too tired and blue to get in to them. really i am looking for anyone who has been through the same thing. i am trying hard not to worry, but i still am. please, if anyone has anything to share, i would really appreciate it. Les

Hi Leslie, Was it called hydronephrosis or was it a type of reflux? My 2 year old had hydronephrosis which we learned about around 7 weeks old when he got a related uti. It was missed during his ultrasound. There are different levels and some require surgery but many others clear up on their own (like my son's did). I am now 24 week pregnant with another boy and the ultrasound tech looked during the 18 week scan and saw nothing. I will have another scan later in the third trimester. We went to many specialists and found out it is the most common congenital deformity among boys and most boys don't have any issues whatsoever. Not sure if this what your son has, but it sounds similar. Good lukc and let me know if you have any other questions. By the way, my ped. recommended circ_msision for this baby (something we pa__sed on with my first son and had to get done at 10 months). Not being circ_msized can aggravate the condition.
