Heartbeat Sounds Really Far Away

I rented a doppler 3 weeks ago so we could listen to the heartbeat everyday for a few seconds to make sure everything is still great in between appts. The first week I had it I was 13 weeks and the heartbeat was usually up front and pretty loud and clear. The next week it seemed to have moved to the sides and was in a lower spot. It was also a little quieter than the week before. This week it is always off to the right side and much quieter than the first week. The rate is still great though, in the 150's, and I can find it everytime, but shouldnt the heart start to get louder the farther along I get? I'll be 16 weeks on monday. Oh, and I do have a tilted uterus, but my doctor said last time it had already started to flip forward. I guess if it had always been really quiet I wouldnt be as worried, but it just seems to get quieter and a lower placement every week. Any thoughts? Sorry so long :)

I should probably add that I am a HUGE worrier that something will go wrong at anytime. I am starting to worry about everything from incompetent cervix to leaking amnio fluid. (Ive been having a little clear discharge over the past weeks too) My next appt isnt for another 5 days, so any advice would really help.

Elizhope - I too am a HUGE worrier, and just rented a doppler. I am not an expert, but I think it would vary in volume based on which way the baby is turned (ie - back facing out or belly etc). I notice a difference in loudness depending on time of day. A question for you - did your dr give you any advice on how safe it is to listen in terms of how often/for how many minutes? We sound a lot a like... I was worried about leaky amnio fluid a week or so ago... I think I just let out a drop of urine when I sneezed (this is my third child and I've heard that can happen!)

Becky - my doctor has to search all the time and often has to adjust the volume but never looks worried so don't worry and Becky - I feel like I pee myself every time I laugh or sneeze

elizhope, I notice this too as I have my own doppler and have been using it daily since 9 weeks (I'm now 24 weeks). It almost seemed easier and louder to get the hb sometimes in the earlier weeks than it is now. I honestly think it is that the baby is moving a lot more and there are more limbs tangled up in there taking up space ;) If you listen for a while you will notice the hb fade out and then come back louder as the baby moves closer to the wand. You may not notice that if you only do it for a few seconds.
