Hi all,
I am reading all these posts saying the doctor listens to the babies heartbeat every month - I am just seeing my regular doctor - and we havent done that - should I ask her about it? She has sent me for 13 week scan - heartbeat fine, and now I have my 19 week scan on Thurs next week - so I will see heartbeat and everything again then. I guess I am asking should I be concerned we are not checking heartbeat each visit - everything else is checked, blood pressure, weight etc etc - had my bloods done - no complications that we know of - so long story short - is not checking heartbeat really unusual - I am in Australia if that makes a difference????? Thanks.

i dont know why ur dr isnt checking the heartbeat. i dont think it has anything to do with u living in another country. but if it is ur regular dr i would ask him/her about it. checking the heartbeat is a very regular thing to be done atleast at my appt. but what im wondering is do u not see a different dr while ur pregnant over there or did u choose to stay withur regular dr?

Hi Kolleen - yeah it seems everyone gets the heartbeat checked - I am going to talk to my doc at my next appointment which is in 2 weeks. I think you can see a different doc when pregnant here, but I spoke with my regular doc - who has looked after lots of prego women - and decided to stay with her as she knows my history and I am very comfortable with her - this is the only thing I am wondering about - I have decided to bite the bullet and just ask her next app why we havent been listening and if we can start doing it?

yeah i would ask there is no reason why you wouldnt be hearing the heart beat. its very cool that u r able to stay with ur regular dr. seeing as she knows u and ur history. is this ur first baby? dont be afraid to speak up. this is ur body and u have questions and concerns that need to be met.

Why don't you have an Obstetrician? I wouldn't be comfortable getting my prenatal care from my primary care physician, they are not specialized in the field of obstetrics.

Hi Ladies - I am not sure why I dont have an obstetrician? I just decided to stay with my normal doctor - dont get me wrong she is a great doc but its just that one thing that is bothering me - as stated i am going to talk to her about why we are doing the heart beat and then go from there - maybe because I had ultra sound at 13 weeks and saw heart beat just before my appointment and am having another ultra sound just before my appointment now she didnt think to do the heartbeat?? I dont know - I am just really stressed about this now - I didnt think it was a big no no to stay with your normal doc if you have a "low" risk pregnancy? So now of course I am freaking out.

hiya bellybubble. i would honestly try not to worry or stress too much about this. i think you should just mention it next time you see your doctor and say that you've heard that the heartbeat usually gets monitored every 4 weeks and just see what your doctor says.
i went in to my doctor at about 8 weeks when i had bad cramping and she didnt check the heartbeat she just prodded my stomach and said everything was fine! i didnt actually hear the heartbeat until my 12 week scan and then again at my 20 week scan. ive heard that in the later stages they monitor it more regularly. for me i think i would start getting stressed if i didnt feel the baby moving. all you have to do is ask and im sure they will put your mind at ease.

Thanks for your rea__surance Cat24 - sometimes it just makes you feel better even just to talk about all your worries! I will definately bring all this up with my doc - and like I said I have a scan on Thurs (cant wait) so once I see my bubble again moving about and waving I will be once again happy - I swear I didnt think it was possible to stress about every thing all the time haha - but i guess its because of the precious bubble I am carrying! Hope all is going well for you! :)

Personally, I would not be comfortable not having an OB for the delivery for fear of the "what if's" I wouldn't want to mess around with a doctor that didn't have experience with all types of occurrences and emergencies that can occur durring labor. If I were in your situation I would find an actual OB and I wouldn't feel bad about it at all. That is just me.

you are welcome bellybubble. i hope all goes well for you and your little one. i think pregnancy makes even the most laid back woman start worrying. i keep worrying and i say 'i'll be fine once the baby is here and is okay' but then i hear you end up worrying about them constantly for the rest of their lives! oh well i suppose we should just get used to worrying!!!

hi bellybubble. my doctor does check the heartbeat everytime i go in for a check up... now he doesn't always tell me what the heartbeat is or anything like that but he does listen to it. i would just ask your doctor. it can't hurt to ask right?

Hi all - my doc isnt actually going to be doing the delivery - I fell 3 weeks short of the private health insurance 1 year pre existing cover - so i am going private - so i will be delivered by the hospital OB and midwifes so that isnt really a concern - i think its called share care? Anyway I will def talk to doc and keep you all updated on what happens and if i decided to change to another doc that my friend recommended and used during pregnancy. Hope you all have a great weekend - i will let you know how my scan goes!!!!! Thursday!!:)
