Ok I know the safest way to sleep is on your left side for optimal liver function. But I constantly change from side to side and need to sleep on my back sometimes. Or even laying down watching tv on back is comfortable. I read you shouldn't lay on back because it restricts blood flow to that main artery, and you could get dizzy, poor circulation and constipation ect., I never felt dizzy yet. BUT is or could it harm baby, brain damage?

Laying on your back doesn't really restrict bloodflow to your main artery until you're farther along and bigger. Are you showing a lot or are you still semi small? And you're still fine laying down watching tv for a little.

I just asked my dr the same thing and she said just sleep however I want to - I am getting bad leg cramps so laying on my side KILLS sometimes. I always sleep on my back. She said that until I'm 7-9 months and a lot bigger, it's not a big deal and we'll talk then about sleeping patterns.

I talked to my doctor about this also and she told me that whent the baby is smaller like say 16-20 weeks or so, the baby doesn't have enough weight to cut off circulation. As you move closer to your 3rd trimester you might not want to be sleeping on your back because now the baby weighs more and depending on postioning they can cut of circulation to your arteries or lay on those veins and cause you to get numbness or dizziness etc. I'm pretty comfortable laying on my back and its uncomforatble for me to sleep on my side because then my chest starts to hurt so I guess I lose either way. Someone told me sleeping with the wedge pillows helps.
