Hi Girls, I'm a little confused with all of this since it's our first baby. I gained about 10 pounds in the first tri becaase I was so sick and all I could stomach was nasty, fatty food. When I saw my dr at 10 weeks he old me to SLOW DOWN and not eat any more sugar, so i stopped completely out of fear of gest. diabetes or gaining so much weight. He scared me! He also told me to hold this weight until week 24. So, for the last 9 weeks (I'm entering week 19), I have maintained my 10 lb weight gain by eating very little. I am not super hungry, but feel terribly guilty that i"m starving the baby. I eat very healthy, lots of fruit, protein and salad, but definitely less than I even ate prior to being prego. I am following his advice, but I feel weird about it. I wanted your advice/input about it. Is 10 pounds to much or normal at 19 weeks? I know that everyone is different, but my main question is "is it healthy for the baby to not eat the extra 300 cals a day?" . My dr says it's fine since women's bodies were made to handle starvation!?!?! But, I'm pregnant? i dont want to blimp out, but I would rather be a whale and have a healthy baby. Please help!!!!!! Thanks :)

I forgot to mention that I'm 5'6" and I started my pregnancy about 10 more than usual since my DH and I were trying to get prego so long, we were seeing a fertility dr, and I was depressed and eating more than usual. I weighted 151 at the beginning and I usually weigh 135-140.

i think your fine. you should eat enough to make you feel ok. I didn't gain any weight in the first tri. but in 4 weeks time i gained 10 lbs! my doc was mad, and i go back next week and i think i've put on almost 8 lbs this month, lol. easter candy. i am a little overweight so she only wanted me to gain 15 lbs through the whole pregnancy. i am 5'10" and weighed 190 when i got prego. i have been going through the house throwing away candy, lol. i don't want to gain weight anymore cuz i used to be small, and would like to have an easier time losing the weight after the baby's born. but i don't think you should starve yourself. eating healthy and exercising moderately will help you gain what you need to. i have been trying to go walking a mile aday when its not raining or 30 degrees outside. don't stress out over anything, your baby is just fine!

Well I'm certainly not a doctor, but that does not sound right to me at all. The second trimester is a major growth period for the baby and I would be much more concerned with getting in those extra nutrients than with a little extra weight gain. To my knowledge, an expected average weight gain during the second trimester is about a pound a week. A doctor may recommend a little less if you were considerably overweight to start, but that is certainly not the case. As long as you're not pigging out on junk food, I would trust your own instincts on this one, or perhaps get a second opinion.

Hi jule, I also don't think this sounds right. At my 20 week appt., I had gained a total of 18 or 20 pounds and my doctor said this was only a 1/2 pound above the normal range. I also gained a lot during the first trimester with this pregnancy and my first. I would definitely not be eating less than before I got pregnant. Eat what you want while trying to eat mainly healthy

Thanks so much for your input. I really appreciate it. My DH and I went out to dinner tonight and I ate quite a bit and felt SOOO good. I'm not going to stress about it anymore since I know that I'm being healthy. I'm just so concerned that the baby is well fed. Thanks for making me feel better!!!

I say if you're eating healthy, eat as much as you want and a little indulgence here and there isn't going to hurt. I was small to begin with, but when I was preggy with my daughter, my doctor never saw any problem with the 52 pounds I packed on. It all dropped off and so far with this pregnancy I'm 30 weeks and have gained 30 pounds.

I am right with you. I gained about 12 pounds my first trimester and recently at my 20 week appt I found out that I am up to 17 pounds. When I was pg with my son I gained 50 and everything was ok. I was hoping not to gain as much this time because it was so uncomfortable last time. It looks like I am heading in the same direction though. My doctors haven't said anything to me. If you are hungry you should eat. Don't worry....

I am in my 21st week and I have gained 13. My Dr said that was ok. If I can only manage to gain 13-15 more I will be thrilled. She said that I am 1/2 way thru and 13 was just fine. I was worried cause I started out chunky but she said I was fine where I was...Enjoy your food!
