Bad Results With Quad Screen September Mommy

Ok went today to get results of quad screen, trisomy 18 was positive and so was one of the others....so they tell me that the # I got was .98 for the one, and positive is actually 2._ _ or higher, so they don't know why the lab sent it as a positive, also they told me that both of them can't be possitive. They said that the trisomy 18 would mean some serious physical abnormality, but that my little guy looks perfect every where, and with every measurment...that out of 35 positive results there is 1 true positive, so now I have to go back in 2 weeks for another ultrasound... it's so aweful worrying about this. They tried to reassure me that my baby looks perfect...but once they started talking about amnio, and c-section and true positives and false positives, and can't reach the lab to find out why the lab put it as possitive, this is just aweful... by the end, when my doctor was looking at the actual numbers they said that they dont want to do amnio, but they want to follow up... also that since there is no obvious abnormality they believe the trisomy 18 was a false positive... help.... I'm so worried now, I haven't even been able to let it sink in that I'm having a little son

Renae - Firstly take a few minutes to allow the great news that you are having a son sink in and let that happiness fill you. Second, dont freak out about these test results. Your dr has told you that your son looks great and perfect on the u/s and he is obviosly not concerned with that end of it. My girfriend just went through the same thing and was told all kinds of bad test results and she worried the entire pregnancy and didn't enjoy it at all, and here just gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby boy with no problems. When I asked about doing these tests my dr recomended me not to do them as there was no history in my family to be concerned about, because she said that majority of results come out as false positives and they create such a terrible worry and stress on the momma that is not warranted. Enjoy the next two weeks and get excited about your little boy!! Have faith that all is just fine and you will see at your next u/s all is ok. Maybe even check back in with your dr to see if they can bump your u/s up a bit so the wait is not so long. Best of luck hon, and talk to that little guy in there and tell him your feelings. Trust me - it does help a bit! (HUGS)

I also was told my baby could have trisomy 18 and it ruined my preganancy. i was offered no follow up to see for sure so I worried the entire time. My dd ended up being perfect. Please try not to worry too much, it really sounds like they screwed up since they said positive for two different things. Good luck.

Thank you both for your support! I spoke with my doctor, finally, and he spoke with the lab... the numbers were correct, and the interpretation was incorrect... so the neural tube defect test was actually negative!!! Also the specialist believes that my son has a 99% chance of being perfectly normal...we will still follow up with the u/s on the 25th, but i'm no longer paniced! thank you soo much for the kind words of support! Best wishes to both of you! :)
