Hello all...my daughter is expecting her first child in late Dec. She went for her 20 week u/s and they found a cyst on the baby's brain. I am scared, I am nervous and so is my daughter. She is 20 years old. I have read the posts old and new but can someone explain to me recent if this is normal..not normal. Any news good or bad would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

Is it a Choroid Plexus Cyst? If so, my daughter had one show up on the 2nd tri screening as well. I was told my baby may have Trisomy 18 and of course you can imagine I was devastated. Long story short, the is now a 20 month old perfect toddler. These cysts can be a soft marker for Trisomy. In order to actually indicate a true trisomy diagnosis, there must be other indicators as well. Usually they are a normal part of development and will go away in time. Did they do the bloodwork as well that a__seses risk of chromosomal disorders? If that was the only thing that they found on the scan, I truly doubt that the baby has anything wrong. Please try not to worry, it ruined my pregnancy and I hate when it happens to others. Colleen

Hi Kathleen, I agree with clindholm, is the cyst a CPC (Chroid Plexus Cyst) If so, they found one on my DD brain at our 20wk check too and she is now a healthy 2 year old with no birth defects. It was explained to me that all babies start out with some fluid on the brain and it eventually drains into the spinal column, just takes longer for some than others. Doc also said they are so extremely common these days mainly due to how high tech the u/s machines are now. All that to say, he did say it is a VERY soft marker for down's but only a very very soft marker and if everything else looked okay on the baby (measurements) there is no need to worry. Easier said than done, yes, but I will say, try to relax, from what I understand they are very common.
