So they say you can't dye your hair when your pregnant...but my hair stylest says you can....
I'm just freaking out because well I've been letting my hair grow out of the dye because I'm to scared to dye it. I'm 22 weeks and well today I just found my first gray hair...and I am 21!!! though it runs in my family to get it at a early age...I just feel so old....and this is going to be my first kid too. I am also single so I don't want to look old after my kid is born lol. any suggestions on what I should do or use?

What went wrong? I'm curious. I'd get mine professionaly done but its about $70 and right now I am putting any money I have into a savings for when my baby is born. I used to get my hair professionaly done but it would always burn my scalp and I'd get sores on my head and it just wasn't comfortable because I am a blonde so they bleach my hair...I just want to use one box of blonde hairdye...I was thinking of going with the no amonia one too. Also being a natural blonde my hair only takes 15 mins to lighten up.

You are more prone to a reaction even if you never had one before because of the hormone & chemical changes your body is going through. The dye itself can't harm the baby (unless your reaction is so bad you need to be medicated to control it), it's the fumes that you need to be worried about. If you are going to do it whether at a salon or at home, make sure the area is VERY well ventilated to reduce your chances of breathing it in.

My doctor said after the first trimester its completely safe to dye your hair. As was said before, you should do it in a well ventilated area. I went to the salon when I was about 16 weeks. They knew i was pregnant and no one thought twice about it. I need to go again but the salon I got to is so d__n expensive!!!

most docs don't care as long as it's not a dye with ammonia or a red dye. but i would NOT go by what a hair dresser says. of course they will tell you it's fine. they are out to make money. and they're dumb to what is safe for babies. best to go by what your doctor says. you can live with a white hair for 9 months.

well my friends hairdresser that because of the hormones a normal hair die from the shop might make it go funny, she got a brown and it turned orange so she had to go to the hairdresser but its because they are always keeping an eye and i supose if it does go a funny colour then they can take it off or atleats make your hair look half normal lol, blimes the only reason im also having myine done is because i died it ages ago a redish colour and my natrual hair coulour is brown so its growing out and if i leave it untill i give birh.well i just cant imagine lol, i am getting hoghlights put in mine which menas they are using bleach so i was worried about the fumes because bleach really pongs!

I have read that it is supposedly safe after the first trimester, but I'm not willing to take the chance. I have considered getting some highlights, but will wait until the baby is born. I'm not convinced that "they" know all the effects of all the chemicals that we breathe and that our skin is exposed to.

Get highlights/lowlights while pregnant, if worried. You still need to worry about the fumes (well ventilated), but when you get highlights/lowlights, they don't apply the color to the scalp (it starts about 1/4 inch down the hair), so there's no danger absorbing it through the skin.
Plus, you can go MUCH longer between colorings, because grow-out is much less evident.

Thats what I have is highlights. I guess everyone should just do what they are comfortable with. I believe I got highlights during my first pregnancy as well and I have a very healthy little girl.

My Dr doesn't want me using color at all, the whole time... :( It sucks because I have darkened for the past few years, most people think it's natural because I was born with really dark hair and have very dark eyes and eyebrows and all... now you can tell it's not natural although luckily for me it's not looking TOO trailer trashy yet.

AmberBaby, is your name Amber? My best friend's name is Amber and she's a redhead :) And my grandma's a redhead, and my mom is a redhead and my niece is a redhead... come to think of it, maybe I'm adopted...lol I love red hair. I think I would just die of happiness if my baby ends up being a little redhead girl. Of course I'll be happy no matter what God give us, but that would be pretty awesome!

I just got back from a doc's appt, and I asked about dying my hair, and my doc said it's fine. She said that there have been studies done on people that work in hair salons that are exposed to the fumes/chemicals throughout their pregnancies, and there is no evidence that says it can causes problems. She said that not much if any of the chemical is absorbed into your skin. And, also, as long as your past the 1st trimester, than you are super safe. Just my doc's opinion...

I feel like it's probably safe and I may actually ask him again now that I'm in the second trimester, but if he says no I'm just not gonna do it. I don't really wanna tick of my OB...lol
Amber, I love red hair. I wanted to be a redhead all my life. I colored it once but it never looks quite like naturally red hair because natural red hair is more orangy and the only people who have the right skin tones to pull off an orange color hair are the people lucky enough to be born with it. I seriously LOVE red hair, it's exotic and stands out more in a crowd. I'm glad you learned to like it as you got older. I know quite a few redheads who hate their hair and I think it's a shame!

My doctor said that it is perfectly fine, so I have had mine highlited. I specifically asked before I did it too. He said that the only reason is because people thought their hair changes while they are prego, but he said you have those follicles in your head long before you are prego, so there is nothing to worry about.
