Short Cervix At 20 Wks

Hi everyone. I went in for my 20 wk u/s today and they found that my cervix is too short and are worried because that could cause preterm labor. Has anyone else been through this or know of this happening? I go back next Wednesday (3/26) to see if it has changed back (I was put on bedrest for a week) but any insight would be very helpful. THANKS!

I previously had a premature baby, and will be getting u/s every 4 weeks from now on to check my cervix, more often if there are any issues. I don't know how it will be managed if anything is found to be a concern, I hope everything will be oka for you. Just continue bedrest and taking it easy, and DON'T STRESS. It's hard not to but it does make a difference in how your body handles the pregnancy. Try meditative music, thoughts, ma__sage, whatever works for you to stay calm and centered, as much as you can.

If your cervix is measuring short, I would ask the doctor to check for funneling as well. I didn't find out that my cervix was shortened, funneling, and membranes were bulging into the cervix (baby's bag of water was in the cervix already) until I was 23 weeks during a 2nd sonogram. I was immediately hospitalized as my cervical length was way too short at 1.75cm and they were sure that I would go into preterm labor. I was diagnosed at the time with incompetent cervix. While in the hospital, the doctor put in a cerclage (surgical st_tch in the cervix to keep it closed). I was discharged to bedrest at home for 3 weeks following the cerclage. During a 2nd appointment, the doctor found that even with the cerclage, my cervix still managed to shorten. So, I was once again admitted to the hospital where I've been the last 6 weeks. I will remain here until baby girl is born (I'm 32 weeks tomorrow). The cerclage will be removed at 36 weeks (God willing I make it that far) and then baby girl could be born anytime afterward. I would definitely ask your doctor how short your cervix is measuring, if there's funneling, and if you need to be referred to a perinatologist (sp???) I would also ask if you need a cerclage as it should be done as soon as possible if it's needed. There's a wonderful site where I've found encouragement and many answers for incompetent cervix. The site is icsupport.informe.com I hope this helps you!

Thanks girls. I was 20 wks yesterday and my cervix measured 2.5 cm today. I really don't know HOW bad that is, but I know it's not good! She also did an internal exam and said that it was definitely closed. She didn't say anything about funneling, but I will ask next time I go. I am really going to take it easy though. I asked about the cerclage and she said that they don't do them this far along. THey do bedrest instead.

Jairia- i hope that everything turns out well for you and your little one!!! Stay rested and I will try to do the same.

Sara 2.5 is low i was 2.1 at the end of the pregnancy for me. They werent as concerned considering i was having the c-section a week later. I know several girls that were as low as that but had cerlages done and it was earlier in their pregnanices one with twins and the other with triplets the one with trips was admitted to the hospital the one with twins had cerlage and was bedrested and both pregnancies were fine. The trips obviously came earlier at 33 weeks. They might just wind up bedresting you and continuously monitoring.

I just wanted to share my story with you. When I was 15w, I started to get a pressure feeling and I started to think I had IC. When I mad mentioned this to my doctor at my 16w appointment, but I figured I would wait until my 18w u/s. At the u/s, I was told that my cervix was nice and long and she had mentioned 1.8 (didn’t know what that meant at the time). I continue to have this feeling until I was 24w...I went to my appt and made my doctor check my cervix. He told me that it was a bit soft and I was sent for an u/s. They sent me immediately back to L&D to be monitored for contractions. My doctor came and saw me and told me that my cervix was between 1.45-1.8cm. I was told to go straight home and be on bed rest until I was 36...unless something happens. I was very scared, that I was going to lose my baby. I went back 1.5 weeks later for another u/s and it had showed that my cervix grew to 2.5cm and there was no evidence of funneling (I had it at my 24w u/s). Praise God! I spent the next VERY LONG 12w in bed and I was bored out of my mind. I had figured the day I got off bed rest my baby would fall right out...NOT! I walked about another 4 weeks and got induced 1 day before my due date (I had no cervix left and I was already dilated to about 6-7cm and no regular contractions) and only to end up having an emergency c-section...he was sunny side up. When I went back to my 6 week pp appointment, I was told that I have a short cervix and the pregnancy didn’t do that to me. Plus, every time I saw my doctor he thought my baby would have been in the nicu for a very long time. The best advice I would give you...listen to the doctors and your body. I know that bed rest can be very boring, but it is better than the alternative. I know that when I get pregnant again, I’ll be back on bed rest...not looking forward to that.

THanks for your responses. I have heard a lot of positive things about babies being fine, but they all include some sort of bedrest. although that is the LAST thing I want to do, I will do it if I have to. Red95- it is encouraging that your cervix grew. I go back on Wed and if mine has grown, I think the bedrest ban will be lifted!! although I am a bit worried because you said you felt pressure. I have felt ALOT of pressure since I hit the 2nd tri! Did your pelvic bone hurt at all??? Mine kills me, but I thought that was normal since this is my 2nd child. ROBYN- thanks for your info too! THank God I don't have twins or triplet, because I would really be scared! and I am glad that they were not worried about your 2.1--It makes me worry a little that I am only at 20 wks and the baby has ALOT more growing to do- meaning a lot more pressure on the cervix, but I am going to be a good girl til Wed and then take it from there!

The pressure feeling I was getting, was as though I had a tampon or something stuck up there and it wanted to come out...not good. Had my cervix not grown, I might have spent the rest of of the time in the hospital and that wasn't an option for me. My doctor was worried because I had had 3 early m/c and he didn't want to take any chances. I hope you have a really good results on Wednesday and hopefully you'll get off of bed rest. I know that it must be tough with already having a kid and to have to deal with this. I know I won't be looking forward to that. Good Luck!

STAY IN BED!!!!! I was diagnosed at 20 weeks with a short cervix and was told to come back in 2 weeks for another measurement... I never made it to that appointment. My son was born at 22 weeks 3 days and pa__sed away. I dont want to scare you, but I know this is VERY serious.

saramcg - March 22

emtcutie- I am sooo sorry for your loss. I think that I breifly remember you from when you posted a few times on "the clean slate"--so this is what happened to you??? did they put you on bed rest for those 2 weeks that you were waiting? Do you remember what your measurement was? Did you have any BH before that? I have had a lot with this pg alredy- but i hope that doesn't mean anything. RED95- thanks again. I don't have any pressure on the inside so that is rea__suring! yeah- bedrest already with my 1 1/2 yr old has been tough- but if I have to do it, I will. I have a great husband and both sides of our family are very supportive. Hopefully I won't have to call on them, but we will see! Have a happy easter!

ok- so i went backtoday and got put in the hospital b/c I now have funneling! they will do another u/s tomorrow morning and we will go from there. this SUCKS, but i'm really worried about my baby girl! I have a long way to go til she would be ok in this world on her own! anyone have any insight?

Red95 - March 26

saramcg, please take care of yourself. I am so sorry to hear that you have be in the hospital...no fun. As I had mentioned, I had funneling on the first u/s but when I went back it was all gone...I guess it was a lot of prayer. I know they can put cercalges in until you're 24 weeks, but I know they would probably prefer not to. Did they do a FFN (to see if you're about to go into labor in the next 2 weeks?) Let us know what happens and I'll keep you in my prayers.

saramcg - March 27

hi red thanks for your prayers. I had another u/s his morning and i'm down to a 1.5 with funneling- hospital now for a week before then will check again. They don't want to do a cerclage, but fight it by going against gravity instead. if i get better in a week then I might get to go home. I don't know what a FFN is-but I don't think they did it ( if they did they didn'ttell me- would I know?) I pray to God that I am not going into labor in the next 2 weeks though! my baby wouldn't live since I am at 21 wks right now. did you do anything special to make the funneling go away?

kay101 - March 28

I can't help with the cervix thing but I can answer what an ffn test is. Before I go into it I'm sorry you have to go through all this :( The ffn is a v____al swab that tests the amount of fetal fibronectin protien in your v____al excretions. If the test is negative, it's almost guaranteed that you won't go into labor in the next 2 weeks. The positive is less accurate and several things such as having s_x can produce a false positive. Even with a positive result your chances of going into labor in the next 2 weeks is about 16%.

saramcg - March 28

thanks kay!! no- they didn't swab- i haven't had many contractions, but the bh started weeks ago- still far between. i swear i haven't laid down this long since i was a baby myself!

kay101 - March 28

haha join the club, I've been doing it for 2 weeks and have another 5-6 to go.
