so..i used some aloe vera gel with tea tree oil in it on my stomach yesterday...and i decided to check just in case on the safety of tea tree oil--i didnt think of this until AFTER i used it of course... and everything i read says to absolutely not use it during pregnancy but it doesnt say why, it also says its toxic to infants and children...now of course my paranoia sinks in because i dont know why it was such a big deal to not use it, im glad i looked it up though because i wont use it again...but does anyone know about this?

If I remember right from my days of infertility problems, one of the fertility vitamins I was taking contained tea tree oil. I think it was supposed to help boost the hormones necessary to help with ovulation, implantation, all that stuff. That's all I can think of about how it might affect the pregnancy. On the bright side though, I've heard that most products you put on your skin (even on your belly) don't absorb into the blood stream to get to your baby. Accutane (acne cream) being a major exception. I would think you'd need to ingest tea tree oil before it could cause any harm, so just wash it off well if you haven't already and don't worry about it. :-)

thanks buffi! it probably does affect hormones which is probably why they dont recommend it during pregnancy, i did wash it off right then and there. thanks for the rea__surance, sometimes it feels like nothing is safe in pregnancy!

I was having acne problems and a friend of mine recommended a face wash with tea tree oil---she swore by it and used it all throughout her first pregnancy. Her dd now 3 is fine of course. I never used the wash, but I asked my doc about face washes and he said anything topical is fine (except some prescription stuff)--like buffi said it doesn't get into the blood stream. You should be fine.

I use tea tree oil for occasional breakouts on my face and haven't had any issues yet but I don't use it in large quant_ties either. The stuff really stinks though so maybe it is the fumes that could be of concern during pregnancy. I would also be very interested in learning why we're not supposed to use it during pregnancy.

im sure its probably ok, i feel better knowing that other women use it...what im a__suming now that i think about it is that maybe they say that because they havent done testing on it with pregnant women? and because they know its toxic in certain levels to infants (which as we know thats totally different than using on yourself during pregnancy) so thats probably all it is

I am freaking out now. I have been using pure tea tree oil on my face at night to help with my acne. I have been using it every night for about 2 weeks or so now. I sure hope everything is ok and i havnt hurt my baby.

I used a tea tree oil mixture as a natural cure for my yeast infection that was too stubborn to go away with OTC medications a year ago. (email me at ericadrewery "at" gmail) It worked great!
I just found out I am 6 weeks pregnant and decided to look if the mixture would be safe during pregnancy and found this:
"Not enough scientific information is available to recommend tea tree oil during pregnancy or b___stfeeding. Animal studies suggest caution in the use of tea tree oil during childbirth because tea tree oil has been reported to decrease the force of spontaneous contractions, which theoretically could put the baby and mother at risk. Women who are b___stfeeding should not apply tea tree oil to the b___st or nipple since it may be absorbed by the infant."
Not too sure what that means, but I guess it means I am out of luck if I get another yeastie during this pregnancy! :)
Hope this helps!
