Any Info On Child Support

This is my first child (I'm 32 weeks pregnant), and I was just wondering how the whole child support thing works. Like, how long do I have to wait before I file for it, and do I need a lawyer (hopefully not, because I don't think I can afford one). Me and the father have been having a lot of problems since about the middle of my pregnancy and I think us separating and getting child support would be the best thing for all 3 of us. I was thinking of not going thru this thru the courts but I will probably just end up chasing after him every time he gets paid trying to get cash so this is really teh best solution. So if anyone get child support, could you please let me know what to do to get it started. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

it's really dependant on your state. which state do you live in? the laws differ per state.

here's from a website. "First of all, it's very important to file for child support as soon as you and your partner separate, because child support judgments are issued as of the date of filing and are not retroactive. If you're unmarried, file for child support as soon after the birth of your child as possible."

I live in Texas. And I really don't know anyone who's had to go thru this so that's why I'm so lost about this whole thing. We're not married, so I guess I'll file as soon as my little girl is born...I guess maybe at the court house? I don't know. Ugh! This is so confusing!

You can always call your local Child Protective Services, or Department of Family and Children's Services and they should be able to send you to the correct agency that can help. You shouldnt have to pay a lawyer or anything, most states have a Child Support Enforcement office to help mothers or fathers, get some support.

Samantha, teddyfinch is right. you wanna file as soon as the baby gets a ssn. My husband and I are still married not separated legally just physically, and emotionally. It does take a while for it to go through so get on it as soon as possible i filed in Feb. and just got my judgement in May. Good Luck so sorry that you have to go through this it sucks but it is necessary if they don't wannna help.
