The father of my child is incarcerated and will not be released until 3 months after the baby is born. Does he need to be at the hospital to sign the birth certificate in order for the baby to carry his lastname?

Hey Dahlia- I know where I live (Georgia) the father has to be present to sign the birth certificate if you want to give the baby his last name. Since he will not be present you will have to give the baby your last name, but after he gets out all you will have to do is go to the court house and ask for the papers you will need to change the baby's last name. It is not hard and it does not cost anything, except $10.00 which is for a copy of the baby's new birth certificate that they will send you. (All states are different though so when you have your baby let them know your situatuion, incase you need to do something different.) good luck
