Legal Question About The Baby S Name

I'm asking this question on behalf of my best friend who is pregnant. There are two potential fathers and both are saying that they are going to push for the baby to have their last name. One concern my friend has is, if the father can change the last name, can they push to change the first and middle names? Also, would anyone happen to know how judges feel about hypenated last names? If she hypenated the last name but the father didn't like that, would a judge make her change the last name to just his last name?
Thanks.

When my dd was born I was asked what last name she was going to have. I wasn't married, but wanted her to have her dad's name. In the case you are referring to, since there are 2 possible dads involved...I would strongly suggest a DNA test to rule out the one who is not dad. As far as I know...once the name is on the birth certificate that is the legal name. Any push to change it would have to go through legal channels.

The child can be named anything the mom wants it to be. She can even choose a completely different last name that has no meaning to anyone. as far as hyphenated last names, she can put whatever she wants. If the fathers want to take it to court to change the babys last name, they can try, but like docbytch said, they need to first establish paternity. even once paternity is established, the father can add his last name to the childs existing name, butcannot change his first and middle name all together without the moms blessing.

the father will have to prove to the judge that it is in the childs best intrest to have a name change, to get a court order to change it. but basically, if mom says no, there is nothing dad can do about it.

No- when my son was born- I chose his name entirely. It was only after a blood test that the father was able to request the last name changed on the birth certificate. It is expensive and time consuming to legally change a name. It is a beautiful thing to be the custodial parent!
