Single Getting Pregnant Terminates My Employment

A teacher (in Florida) told me that if a single teacher gets pregnant (this case she was getting near 40 and was going through fertility) she would be let go. It had to do with the code of ethics for the school. I thought the teacher that told me was crazy and that there had to be a federal law that protects a teacher in this case. Does this actually happen? Can it? I would think the pregnancy discrimination act would protect her over some code of school ethics she swore to when getting hired.

I really don't know how true that is--it doesn't sound true, based on what I know about US law. In TX this is definitely not the case. I do know that private schools (like catholic schools) can have such clauses for their employed. You should look at your employment contract. It should be laid out there if you have to adhere to any "moral" codes.

I would really doubt that this is true and if it is, I would surely take it to court. Never when filling out a job application or my resume, have I ever had to put my marital status down. It's not the employers business regardless of the job whether or not you are married, single, divorced, or widowed.

It's not true. That can only fire you if you do not return after your leave which is only between 8-14 weeks depending on company policy and state law. Most women don't come back in time so the school will find someone to fill your position. As long as you communicate with your employer and keep a good repor the pregnancy should interfere with your job security.

If you want more information, I suggest you do some research on The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA). It applies to all states. I have a supervisor at my work who is treating me VERY different since I told her I was pregnant, and has been so rude to me. So I am doing my research just in case she decides to fire me and from what I found out, the PDA applies to all states.
