When can you first hear the baby’s heart beat? When can they tell the s_x of the baby by ultrasound? I’m 12 weeks pregnant and I don’t have my first doctor’s appointment until February 2nd. I’m not sure what to expect. I also am not sure of the date of my last menstrual period so I could be farther along than they think. I went to the health department and had my pregnancy confirmed but all they did was take a urine sample, ask me a few questions and then they made me guess when my last period could have been so they could come up with an estimated due date. How can the doctor tell my exact due date for sure? Any advice on what to expect would be appreciated. I don't have any friends or family close by and I'm single and doing this by myself so I want to make sure I'm doing this right and asking the right questions. Thanks!

the dr. should be able to give you a better due date with an ultrasound; the s_x organs start to develop around 14wks, so it's possible to tell the s_x a couple wks later but you should probably wait until about 18wks to make sure the organs are developed enough (i founfd out my baby's s_x at 18wks4dys). at your 1st appt., expect the dr. to ask you a million questions about yours and the fathers history, background etc. also expect to have alot of blood drawn (they test for everything from anemia to diabetes to std's). my first appt was mostly about the dr getting to know my history, confirming my pregnancy (which i already knew), and the dr. giving me a script for vitamins (i'd already been taking them, but he prescribed different ones after my old bottle was finished)...make sure you start taking prenatal vitamins ASAP. you can get them at walmart, CVS or even order them online. well,that's about all i can think of right now...good luck and **CONGRATULATIONS!!!** :o)
