amanda it is perfectly safe dyring pregnancy, its weird how you guys have never really heard of it and here its the most commonly used pain relif during labour lol, we also use it if you break your arm ect in ambulances.........you use it while having a contraction or just before it takes about 10secs to take affect and about a miniute to wear of, it kinda makes you feel a bit drunk. whwn we have wrok done at the dentist we have an injection in the gum that makes the side of your face go gum for an hour or so

What is it?
Entonox, often called "gas and air", is a gas made up of 50 per cent oxygen and 50 per cent nitrous oxide. The vast majority of maternity hospitals pump "gas and air" to all of their delivery rooms from a central supply, so it's always available when you want it. The gas is colourless and odourless, and the hospital's "scavenger system" will ensure that any gas that escapes into the delivery room is removed from the atmosphere.
When should I use it?

You can have "gas and air" whenever you want in labour. Simply put the mouthpiece between your lips or teeth and breathe deeply and evenly. This will operate a two-way valve that releases the Entonox for you to breathe in and takes away the carbon dioxide you breathe out. Continue to breathe deeply until you start to feel a little light-headed. Your hand will then drop away from your face and you will stop breathing in the Entonox. Within a few seconds, you will feel perfectly normal again.
What are the advantages of Entonox?
• Easy to use
• Under your control
• Doesn't stay in your system
• Takes the edge off contractions
• Contains oxygen that is good for your baby
• Can be used for a home birth
• If you want to labour in water, you can use "gas and air" while in the pool.
What are its disadvantages?
• Only a mild pain-killer
• May make you feel sick
• Dries your mouth out
Any useful tips?
• Start breathing the Entonox the very second you feel a contraction beginning. It takes at least 20 seconds for the gas to build up in your blood stream to a sufficient level to give you some pain relief, and 45-50 seconds before it reaches it's greatest effectiveness. If you wait until the contraction really hurts, and then start breathing the Entonox, it will be taking effect in between contractions!
• If you're offered "gas and air" through a rubber facemask, and the rubber makes you feel queasy, ask for a mouthpiece. It's easy to swap the mask for a mouthpiece.
• Have lots of sips of water in between contractions to keep your mouth moist.
• When you're pushing your baby out in the second stage of labour, women usually find it easier to concentrate without using the "gas and air" but a few women like to have a little "gas and air" at the beginning of each contraction, but then put the mouthpiece to one side, and PUSH!
• Don't feel bad if Entonox isn't enough to help you cope with contractions. Try something else. Using "gas and air" doesn't prevent you from having any other drugs for pain relief.

uh huh. When I have my next the doctor is going to get his lazy b___t out of bed, come to the hospital and give me the epidural. I waited for him for 7 freaking hours to come in so I could be approved (dont we have ob's on call for a reason?) and I ended up having her 20 minutes later. I can admit I did not like labor, I did ask the nurse to kill me (I told her I would pay her and I was NOT joking lol). Paxton woke me up at 4am on the 23rd with contractions, ended them at 9am, went back into labor at 8pm and had her at almost 9am the 24th. I was tired and in pain and wanted someone to shot me. So yeah I say screw the laughing gas, put the needle in my back! My pain tolerance is very low lol.

There are a lot of little differences between America and England. Personally I freaking love everything about England. I stayed there on vacation for two weeks and I loved every bit of it. The buildings, the people, the food, the ACCENTS and slang that totally pwns ours. Everyone is all nice... Like that episode of family guy they were saying that English people have "drive by arguments" instead of drive by shootings... they show this English guy drive up to another guy and say "Oh Reginald... I disagree!" And drive off hahahahaha I so wish it was really like that! I'd like to go back someday... oh man I'd love to go to Italy too. They have boat taxis! AWESOME.
I apologize for that being pretty much totally off topic but that's all I had to say in response.
Amanda- gosh I'm sorry your labor was so hard! I had a pretty easy labor and when she was born I was like "Well that wasn't so bad." I know every time I say that people wanna strangle me, so sorry in advance if that's your reaction haha ^_^

lol no dont want to strangle you. I think I would have handled it alot better had I gotten some sleep inbetween the contractions in the morning and labor at night. But I still would have handled it poorly cause I'm a wimp when it comes to pain. I think I scared the hell out of the other woman giving birth lol! I have alot of respect for those who go natural, just not for me!

haha i felt the same towards the end i had been in labour since 4am had had contractions 3 mins apart all day and when it got to like 6pm i was like ok i give up now! i remember asking for a c-section just there and then with no pain relif i swore at the time it would hurt less lol, its so worth it though i can hardly remember the pain now i just remember my thoughts at the time lol thats all that keeps me from remembering how painful it was

Hahaha I thought I was lucky to have started labor at 4AM because I had gotten some sleep beforehand! I was having contractions every 3 minutes for like half the day since I had her at 2PM. I wasn't even really bothered by the contractions. I was saying while I was having them "I've had period cramps worse than this." Then when they said it was time for the epidural I was just like "Well... okay." And immediately after she was born I was getting visitors saying "I can't believe you just gave birth... you look like you've been strolling around in the park!"

PERIOD PAINS?!!! Ok now I want to strangle you! lol j/k. I walked around 3cm for almost 3 weeks. I thought it would be easier cause I was already dialated. Ha. I didnt start with any easy slow labor. When it started it started hard. Contraction on top of contraction. The nurse gave me something in the iv so I could "rest in between contractions". I didnt know where I was or what was going on after that! I swore I wouldnt do it again but it's worth it lol. Hopefully next time wont be as bad.

haha angel here they also have shots that numb your mouth during dental work. I had laughing gas during my wisdom teeth surgery. That stuff it awesome. I wish they offered it for labor here, it would make labor soo much easier. Though they gave me a shot of something in my iv that felt alot like the effects of laughing gas. It felt just like i was drunk.
I was exhausted during labor with Mylie. I went to the hospital at 11 pm and had been up for 24 hours before i got 45 minutes of sleep. By bed time the day i had her Ryan and i had both been awake for 40 hours. With Rylie i went to the hospital at 10 am. Much better timing.
During labor i kept telling Ryan no more babies and now im ready to do it again! Well almost, lol. Labor with Rylie was much easier and i did it completely pain relief free. Labor with Mylie whooped my a__s. I was acreaming quite loudly. My OB was teling me to push and i was screaming "I CANT." The pressure i felt the last hour was sooo much worse then the contractions and i have back labor.
Amanda i so agree with you about the moniters during labor. Mylie had a knot in her cord and if it had tightened i would have needed and emergency c-section or she would have died. The only was to know if it had would have been if her heart rate dropped which you have no idea without a moniter.

newbaby i was the same when it came to pushing!the doctoe examined me at 9cm and 15 mins told me to startpushing and took the gas and air! thats when it went down hill for me lol! i sware i didnt feel the need tp push until about an hour after that! i was all over the place though the midwife and my mum and tonie were all telling me to push and i was yelling that i couldnt! at one point i was under the bed and the midwife told me to stop messing around! and i yelled back "yes i came here just to fu**ing mess around" lol, well an hour later she was saying if i dont try and push (yes she had the cheek to say that after i had been tryign my hardest to push for an hour when i think i was still only 9cm!) the she's going to have to use forceps!! well in the end she put my legs in styrps and about 45mins later she arrived! i remmebr having pressure that felt like the midwife had her finger up my bum lol

I remember them saying "alright just let me know when you feel like you need to push." And I had felt like I needed to push since the contractions had started.... So when it actually came time to push they had to tell me haha. When it came time to push it felt more like she was falling out and pushing wasn't going to be necessary hahaha. The pushing was fine, the contractions were fine, the episiotomy was the worst for me. It burned in a weird way like someone giving me an indian rope burn.
Amanda.. I know! Sorry! My mom keeps telling me to stop talking about my birth story to anyone who's had kids because I'll get punched in the face one of these days hahaha.

haha i wsih it was that easy getting her out for me lol, i think half an hour was spent getting her head, everytime i pushed her head would nearly pop out and then i'd stop and it would pop back lol........i spent half an hour doing that so god knows how many times my mum and tomie were thinking she was just about to enter the world for me to stop and for her to dissapear lol! the only real painful bit for me pushing her head was when the bit just behind her ears i think came out and i got a sharp pain like somebody pinched me down there or something lol i think it actually made me jump..........her body coming out was weird as the midwife was kinda pushing and twisiting her lol..oh and when her head was crowning she kept turning it drom side to side! now that was an odd sensation lol! and according to mu my mum and tonie it looked rather funny lol, aww amanda i cant imagine having an episotomy i had a 1st degree tear that didnt even need st_tches and that was so sore after lol

Yea i told the nurses it felt like the baby was coming out of my b___t. I felt the urge to push soooo bad for an hour before they let me push. I was only 9 cm so i had to wait. When they finally told me i could push my OB said i had to wait until a contraction but i told him i couldnt so he let me start pushing. I pushed for half an hour. He kept saying "her heads right here" but when id stop pushing she'd go back in. Finally her head popped out but her shoulders were stuck. That was the hardest part. My OB has his fingers pulling my v____a away from her neck until i could

what the hell...anyway
finish pushng her out. With Rylie i never even had the urge to push. He was just like "its time" and i was like "ok" and pushed her out after 3 pushes. And that was with no pain meds. I tore with Rylie and he did an episotomy after i tore. With Mylie i didnt tear at all. I just had what he called a "skidmark" haha.
My OB had to turm Mylie inside of me because she was face up. Now that felt funny. She was transverse (sideways) as well but luckily she turned herself.
Angel why were you under the bed? lol.

When the nurse was turning up the drop on my epidural I looked over at her and said "It feels like a really big fist is falling out of me" (or something along those lines. I really thought I said "I feel her head" but no, my mom said that I said I felt a fist.) I only pushed for a total of 7 minutes it was probably only 4 or 5 pushes before she was out. When her head came out I thought it was over and I got all relaxed ready to see her, then they were like "Uh. There's still the shoulders." So it was one more push for that and THEN it was over haha. I still felt pretty much pregnant until the placenta was delivered. Then it was like my stomach deflated. My doctor was pretty quick to give me an episiotomy... I saw the whole thing in the reflection of his gla__ses, so I could see her head coming out and it looked like she would have been fine but, he cut me anyways. My mom said there's something about redheads and it being more likely for them to need it. She also said redheads bleed more than most people do but I have no idea if that's true or not. Ellie also didn't have a "cone head" at all which I thought was weird. When my nephew came out he had a cone head and he didn't even make it all the way through, my sister had an emergency c-section. I guess maybe it was because I wasn't in labor for that long? I don't know. I was looking at pictures of her as a newborn the other day and every time I do I can't believe how small she was. Like I'll look at my hand or something compared to her... gosh she was teeny tiny! I feel like I didn't even notice her growing, I'm sitting here thinking she's still as small as the day she was born but nooooo she isn't hahaha
