I started having contractions really early this morning and went to the doctor because they were getting so regular. I went about a week in a half ago and was dilated and only 50% effaced, when I went today I was 1 cm dilated and 80% effaced. I started having brown discharge now and wasn't sure whether it was my mucus plug or something else? Could this be the start of preterm labor? im only 36 weeks right now and the dr said she would rather me be able to wait until next week if I can so that way i'll at least be term. If you've had any similar experience please let me know.

It could be the signs of labor. Or it could go on for another week or two. Sometimes women walk around 2+ cm's dilated and having irregular contractions for weeks. At least you are 36 weeks and if you do go into labor, Im sure your babe will be okay. Good luck, and let us know!!!

Hi newlywed, am currently 35weeks and 3 days. I went into the doctor at 34 weeks and 5 days because I too was having a lot of contractions...I'm pretty sure they were braxton hicks, but still I was having A LOT and I also had some slight cramping, like menstral cramps. So, my doc checked me and discovered I too was 1cm dialted but not effaced at all. She said she'd like to see me come in next week at 3cm dialated and 50% effaced. She said that being effaced and dialated early doesn't mean I'll go into labor early, she just said that's less laboring I'll have to do on D-day (delivery day :-). So, you should be fine. Also, I did have the same kind of brownish discharge and it probably is the mucas plug...it could all come out at once or in phases depending on how you're thinning out. Women can walk around for days and weeks with the mucas plug gone...I was just told to avoid baths and swimming where anything can get up in there and cause infection. So, have you been having any more contractions? I was having about 6-8 and hour last night most of the night, but I was pretty sure they were BH so I didn't go in and today they've stopped. Gosh, this is all such a mystery...but it will work itself out soon enough. good luck to you.

Thanks for your responses. Yes, I am still having more contractions, they started up again this morning and have lasted throughout the day. It doesn't help that the little guy inside of me likes to move and kick. He's been pushing on my back all day making me have to go pee like every 10 minutes or so. His head is already very low as well so that adds to the pressure, at least when he starts pushing anyway. thanks again for your responses.

Hi again...I just wanted to mention that my doctor said that if the baby is moving a lot, or you've held your bladder too long or if you're dehydrated...those are just a few things that can cause the contractions and sometimes just drinking water for a few hours can help them go away. I've still been having them as well. They stopped for a while and then started up again, so I've just been drinking water like crazy and it seems to be helping. And if they are real contractions then they won't go away if you hydrate yourself or go for a walk or change positions (such as laying on your left side)...just food for thought. Take care and good luck.
