Castor Oil Anyone Tried It

I am 38 weeks pregnant, due on the 12th. I went to the Dr on Monday and she said I was 2 cm dilated and about 60% effaced and didn't explain what it meant or elaborate really. She recommended I try Castor Oil. I found that to be very weird seeing as I have heard so many horror stories about women taking it. I have been having alot of painless contractions (at least 2 an hour) for the past 2 weeks. I also have been having menstrual like cramps. I have been taking evening primrose oil and red raspberry leaf since 36 weeks at her suggestion. So really my question is has anyone tried the castor oil and what results did you get? I do not want to cause any harm to myself or the baby and CAN wait until she said she will induce me which is the 15th. I was just looking for advice on the matter. Thank you!

Hey, I personally have not tried it since I'm in my first pregnancy and not due until June. But one of my friends tried it and said first of all it is terrible to swallow, she threw up about 5 times within an hour of drinking it, then she got horrible diarrhea. She said the worst part about it is that it didn't even put her into labor, so she went through all that for nothing. I am very surprised that your doctor told you to take that. Most doctors will basically tell you to do it at your own risk, but will definitely not recommend it. My doctor has alraedy told me that he is against it because the voilent throwing up and diarrhea can cause the baby's heart rate to jump around.

Like the other girls I haven't tried it personally either.. But I've never heard any good things about it. Diarrhea and that's about it. Try long walks or having s_x, that's what seems to have the highest success rate.

With 2 weeks to go still, I wouldn't touch the stuff! I haven't heard anything good about it but it sounds like your body is doing what it's supposed to do so why bother with the stuff?? Diarrhea and vomitting? No thanks! :)

i tried it with my 2nd when i got to 2 weeks overdue as i had been induced with my 1st and didnt want to be again, and it worked. i took bout 2 tbls in some pepsi at bout 9pm and woke up bout 3 with pains, she was born at 6am perfectly healthy. with my 3rd i took same amount again at 40 weeks and bout 7 hours later she was born perfectly healthy. im 40 weeks now and will consider it again rather than face induction. think you should maybe wait till 40 weeks if your gonna try it and ask your MW how much she recomends you take, gud luck :=) xx

I've heard that it can work, but that you can be having diarreah while in labor and pushing.

hi there. i actually did use castor oil to get labor on the way with my last son and it worked! i drank almost 3/4 of a bottle on saturday and went walking and shopping with my MIL. then on sunday morning at about 7 oclock i started having contractions. i had my son about 5 hours later. i owe it all to the castor oil and the walking! let me tell you it was like drinking liquid vaseline! it was horrible. it didn't taste like much of anything. but it's all psychological!

oops i meant 1/4 of a small bottle not 3/4... yikes. sorry.

I have personally tried it and all is did was give me gnarly diarrhea and no baby then to top it off it really aggravated my hemorrhoids and I had to use a circle pillow until I delivered a week later! I have heard that it can cause the baby to poop in utero and that's not good...so be careful

i also have not tried it but a friend of mine did. she did it three times and alls it did to her was make her mad and very sick. she threw up and had diarreha (sp) for two days. i dont know if i will ever do it. but desparate times call for for desparate measures right? once your ready to have the baby your done right

I did it with my little man in august and it worked like a charm! i used a drink shaker and put a few tablespoons of castor oil, and cranberry juice LOADS of crushed ice...and let it get really really cold...then i drank it down. i couldn't taste a thing...just a little bit of oily texture on my tongue when i was done...anyway seven hours later i was headed to the hospital in labor. Hans my son the next morning. I didn't get have any side effects. my friend also did it a few weeks before me and had the same resuls! A baby! But like everyone else said i would wait until you are closer to your due date. there is a reason we have due dates...thats how long a baby likes to cook!

I tried it with my daughter at 38 weeks and it did absolutly nothing. I have heard that if your body is ready it will work though.
