I plan to work as late as I can before go into labor and start to think "what if my water break when I am at work (or in public places)... and how do I prevent this messy accident? Would wearing "depend" work in your opinion? Thanks ladies in advance for the thoughts...

Everyone is different. For me I definitely knew. I worked till the end and was nervous about that too. Luckily, it happened in the evening and I ran to the bathroom. But, everyone is different. I had a big gush of water come out. There are some people who may just have a trickle and be leaking. That is what happened to my friend. Try not to worry about it.

I wouldn't worry that much about it. My water broke with my ds and it was only a trickle. If you are very concerned about it then wearing a pad should be sufficient but not a depend. The majority of women go into labor without their water breaking anyways.

I had my waters break first both times and it was obvious. Don't worry about the public place thing - second time mine broke at a dinner party and everyone was just so happy that something exciting had happened and it wasn't a dull party! The only thing I'ld say is as soon as they break you need to call your doctor for advice and be able to get to where you want to give birth within a reasonable timeframe. The waters smell sweet I think and mine looked clear but thick a bit like a clear oil. It is a bit messy but you really don't care - giving birth is a lot messier!

Heather's right that its rare to go into labour with your waters breaking first - it just seems that the way it happens with me. From fuzzy memory I think if you are standing its a trickle at the start as babies head acts a cork - though I had mucous plug and waters go almost at same time 2nd time round at party - if you are lying it can be a lot more.

royalpoinciana i definately agree with justine 1. If you are walking around or standing the babies head acts like a cork so it shouldn't be noticeable to anyone but you. If you are lying down however as I was with my daughter the baby's head is sort of out of the way so there can be a big gush. But you should be fine if you are sitting or standing. I would try wearing a panty liner I have been wearing them for about 6 months now (35 weeks) because of the extreme discharge :) and they are not as uncomfortable depends:)
