Doctors Care

Well lately when I go my doctors appointments they don't seem to tell me much. The weigh me, measure the baby, measure my blood pressure, and listen to the baby's heartbeat. They have never done any kind of exam to see how far I might have dilated or if I have at all. I'm a few days from being 40 weeks pregnant, does that seem right? I know we wondered about it and asked the doctor, she said that they no longer do it unless you've been having a lot of contractions because it could cause unnecessary infections. Has anyone else ran into this, or does it seem like the doctors are just trying to keep from getting sued if something happens?

Hey Babybelle, I was at my appointment yesterday. My due date is Friday and it was the first time they actually checked if I was dilated. I had asked previously and they said the same thing: only do it one week before your due date unless you have been contracting a lot... I think it depends on the Dr. Some others do it from 36 weeks on. But it doesn't mean much, I think that's why they don't do it routinely.

Thanks, I feel better knowing that. My husbands mom was just making me worried that something was going on, because she kept saying, 'well when I had my kids they checked at every appointment I had my last month.' I guess things have changed a lot in about 25 years.

thats weird to me. My doc checks me at 30 weeks for preterm labor. just making sure that everything is closed up. Once i got to around 34-36 weeks she checked to make sure the baby is head down. I think she checked me at 34 weeks to see if i was dialated and again at 36 weeks. I dont know if my case was different though because i was starting to dialate at 32 weeks. Some docs just might not find that necessary to do. i have heard that the infection thing is true.
