How Can I Get Another Ultrasound

i am 32 wks and i haven't had an ultrasound since 20 wks. the dr will only give me one if they suspect a problem or else i will have to pay for it-$300. I am happy they don't suspect any problems but i want to see that everything is okay-i'd like to know how big he is exactly and make sure he is measuring accurately and i'd just like to see how big he ha gotten. I don't want to lie and say something is wrong when its not just to get an ultrasound so how can i convince the dr to give me an ultrasound so my insurance can pay for it? (It's too late for a 3d/4d so that is not an option)

hi breadtl long time no see. i remember we both are due on the same day. i just read your post n wanted to know why is it too late for 3d ?. about the scan u can ask for one by 37th week. to determine the position.

There are some private ultrasound clinics that can help you out, but they do cost money. They won't tell you if it's healthy or not because they aren't trained to, but it's just nice to see your baby. They can give you a DVD of your ultrasound too! And it's not too late for a 4D ultrasound, actually, the farther along you are the more clear the picture will be.

My doctor does one at 15-20 weeks and again at 36-38 weeks to determine size etc. So that is weird. I would call your insurance sometimes they only agree to pay for 2 ultrasounds during a pregnancy. Good luck

actually...i think beardtl is right. My dr office wouldnt do a 3d ultrasound on me at 30 weeks. They said i was too far along. You need to be between 27-28 weeks to be able to see a clear pic b/c after that the baby is too big.

Thanks for your quick responses..My office will not do a 3d after 30 wks. i can go to another office and get one or just request one from my office i was just trying to avoid the $300 fee for requesting one. It just seems as if they would want to check the status of him, but....

Beardtl, I would just let you doctor know that you are concerned if you baby is in the right position and the size and they might be willing to have you get an ultrasound. If your baby is not head down then it can pose a problem with giving birth. My daughter was breech and we didn't know that until we had and ultrasound done and still when I went in to have her turned and delivered we had to have and ultrasound to make sure she didn't turn. Of course she didn't and if I were to have her breech or in another position it could cause harm to her and myself. See if they will give you one under that reasoning. GL and hope you can get one before you deliver.

I'd say just go ahead and pay the $300 if you really really really want one, I would. Is that how most insurance companies work? That's crazy to me. I guess if its really not necessary they won't cover it, huh? I'm covered for an u/s every visit but maybe that's just because I'm high risk. . . . Even though I don't necessarily NEED them. I don't know much about insurance since I was on my parents until I got married almost 2 years ago but I think they should cover more than 1 or 2. They only take a couple of minutes.

Another suggestion would be to search for a clinic that will do random u/s for people at a low cost. Some people get and u/s so early in their pregnancy and they want to know later what the s_x of the baby is. I know with my clinic they will do a u/s at your request for $100 if your request is not requested by the doctor due to medical issues or concerns.

FYI: When I got my 3D u/s with my 1st the tech advised against getting one done after 30 wks because the baby is so cramped that there will likely not be very many clear shots of baby's face. I got 2 done with my 2st pregnancy...1 at 22wks and the other at 26wks. My pics with the 22wks 3D u/s were A LOT clearer than the one done at 26wks.

Most doctors are sympathetic, mine came up with a few reasons in order for me to get another one. Do you have a good relationship with your doctor? I would just ask if he could come up with a reason for another one. Maybe just say "i know you said that you would not perform another u/s unless there is a problem but i'd really like to see my baby one more time, do you think you could order one to check the position or something?" The worst thing he can say is no, it doesn't hurt to try.

I got another u/s at 34 weeks. My doc used the excuse for insurance that he was concerned that the baby was measuring small. That way we got a size estimate and could see that he was head down. The only frustrating thing was that lying on my back was making me feel sick so the doc made me turn away from the screen while he did most of the u/s so I didn't get to see much. of course it was just great to hear that he looks great!

my office has various dr so i don't have one particular dr that i see there are two that i have a personal relationship with but they just rea__sure me that everything is going perfectly fine and to let them worry about the baby. I guess I should just be grateful that I'm not high risk and don't require extra u/s. maybe next time i'll start crying and they will feel sorry for me :)
