I am 34 wks 5 dys and this is my 2nd child she told me that at my appt after the next one which will be 3 wks from today. If labor hasn't started she will def strip my mebranes to get things moving. I have a few questions #1 is this normal that she wouldn't wait until 40 wks don't get me wrong I wish teh baby could come now if she was fully developed but I was just wondering. She said that she doesn't want to risk her getting too big in there a 6 pounder will be just right because i had a c section and i really wanna try for a vbac so she said it would be best to try to get as soon as we can because my pelvis is a little in the small side. Also what exactly is stripping the mebranes? is that actually breaking the water? Any insight would be helpful :) Thank you.

no stripping your membranes isn't breaking your water. its just trying to unattach the bag of waters from the uterine wall. but it doesn't always work. i had mine done yesterday and nothing. it only really works if your truly close to starting labor. it worked with my last baby but she was already 6 days late. but i am 39 wks today and she stripped them over 24 hours ago and nothing. lost a little bit of plug but thats it. but if your body is truly ready it will probably work.

Just because the doc strips your membranes doesn't mean you will automatically go into labor. So the fact that the doc will do it at about 37 weeks is fine, especially since you don't want the baby to be too big trying the VBAC. I had my membranes stripped and went into labor a day or two later, but I know it doesn't work like that for everyone. I had my daughter at exactly 37 weeks and she was 8 pounds. I had gestational diabetes, so they kind-of wanted to move things along before she got too big as well.

I think it effects everyone differently. With my last pregnancy I had mine stripped at 38 weeks because I was so swollen and they didn't want me to get any bigger. My water broke two days later and my son was 6 lbs 12 oz. So, for me it definitely got things moving. Good luck to you.

I'm guessing there's no guarantee because I think I remember girls complaining it didn't work for them, but like I said, it was pretty effective for me. I went into labor within the few days after. It's almost like it irritates things into starting. Good luck!
