To Drug Or Not To Drug

I'm planning on going all natural at a birth center (i.e. no drugs or intervention, including epistiomy). If I feel I can't handle the pain though I am willing to take a partial dose of a narcotic (they don't use demerol but I can't remember the name of what they do use), just enough to take the edge off, or even a full dose if I feel I really need it. No epideral for me, though.

I have to say i agree with Cat, there is so much negativity about c-sections, and it's not as horrible as some people want to make it seem. Doctors know where and how to cut you just end up with a bikini line incision. Uterine rupture is a 1% possibility when you're having a repeat c-section. with a v____al delivery, you have the possibility of tearing plus the pain. which ever way is better for both mother and baby is best. I had a c-section with my first and although i had the option of doing a v____al this time since she is head down, i opted for the repeat c-section. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I also dont know what the negativity is about c-sections i had an emergency one with my son 9 years ago and just had a repeat one with my now 7 week old son that was scheduled at 38 weeks it was wonderful no problems whatsoever i was up and walking the next day very little pain medication after 24 hours. Yes there is discomfort after the surgery and yes i still have some pain in the incision area mainly from lifting a 12 lb baby all day but i never had any issues for the past 9 years to now from my 1st c-section. All that matters is the mother and the baby getting thru this healthy, whether medicated, non medicated or c-section.

I agree with Cat too - keep your options open because you never know what it will be like until you're in the middle of labor. With my dd I thought I could make it, but I was induced and it was terrible! I went for the epi and was super happy about it. I think it's great to want to go all natural, but sometimes it can make life a bit easier and the whole experience a bit more pleasant. I was able to enjoy my delivery much much more. Also, I've known a ton of people who have had babies and not ONE of them had a c-section because of an epidural.

I was induced with my first and it was a really good experience, everyone is different. I had an epidural and it was wonderful. I wasn't as numb as I really wanted to be, and I was more so on one side than the other, but overall it was bearable. I was able to concentrated on pushing and enjoy the birth. I will be induced with this baby as well and plan to have an epidural again. It is a personal choice, just leave yourself open to changing your mind in the middle. You may find the pain bearable and be able to go without pain meds or you may decide that and epidural is for you. Either way, the important thing is that you have a healthy mom and a healthy baby. :o}

I'm hoping to go all natural, my mom did it with all 3 of her kids, no drugs, no iv, nothing, so she's my inspiration, and I don't want to back out of my decision so I'm making sure that my boyfriend does not allow it no matter how much I BEG. haha, good luck to everyone!!
