I Think I May Be Having Twins

Hi ladies I'm 13 weeks pregnant with my first and look about 5 months. I'm all belly. I just found out that there are twins are both my husbands side and my side. My first ultrasound is scheduled for the end of feb. I'm hoping may be next week the doctor will be able to hear one or two heart beats. I just wanted to know if your doctor could hear more than one heart beat?

Congrats!!! If you are 13 weeks, haven't you you had a first sono yet? If not, the dr. will be able to hear more than 1 heartbeat if you have twins. Good luck.

thanks no my doctor told me to wait until i was 18 weeks and have the 3D ultrasound done. He said that everything is going well so there is no reason to do one prior to that. I was a little dissapointed because i really want to see my baby or babies but i only have another 5 weeks to wait.

it could be but size of your tummy isn't the best indicator as there are other reasons for twins. Hopefully at your appt. your Doc will wonder why you are big and do a sono. My doc never heard more than one hb with our girls.

besides family history do you know the other reasons There are twins on my side and my husbands which i just found out recently that is why i am starting to think that may be i am carrying twins. I just pray for a healthy baby or babies. I'm happy either way

Did the DR say that your uterus is measuring ahead of schedule? Does he have reason to believe there is more than one?

No my dr. hasn't said anything like that. I saw him when i was 5 weeks to get confirmation that i was pregnant then i saw him at 10 weeks and had the "first prenatal" appointment and i go back next week for my 2nd app.

At 10 weeks we were able to hear the 3 heartbeats (but that was while doing on sono).

The size of your belly is no indication of twins. The size of your uterus could be. But if your uterus wasn't measuring large at 10 weeks you probably don't have twins.

What type of twins are in your families? Are they identical or fraternal? If fraternal on your side, then that would up your chances. If they are identical, that wouldn't be hereditary unless your husband's side also had identicals and he carried a certain protein and your egg was receptive to it. Other things that increase your chances would be age (over 35), prior pregnancies, Nigerian decent, sudden weight gain or being overweight, prior twin pregnancies, and fertility meds.

the twins are your dh's side will not impact your chances as he can't control how many eggs you will drop. As one states there is some evidence of an enzyme causing the egg to split but it is pretty rare that all the conditions are perfect enought for that to happen. Good Luck.

I have fraternal twin girls. We did not know we were having twins until our scheduled u/s at 18 weeks. At my 12 week appt my ob only heard one heartbeat and my uterus didn't measure ahead. I thought I heard a second heartbeat but he said it was just an echo because I had a 16 mth old daughter and my uterus was like a big cave. Since i measured right on and he didn't think it was really two separate heartbeats, he didn't investigate it any further. We were shocked at the u/s. I saw my ob after the u/s and, showing him the u/s pics, said this is baby A and this is baby Echo!! LOL! My twins were totally missed until u/s. I looked bigger like you, but my uterus was right on. Mother nature is a funny woman!! Congrats on ur pg and good luck!!

from what I read, Fraternal twins come from the moms side, identicals come from dads side or both even. im confused on that as well. I found out on my side I have triplets (natural) and there are twins and triplets (identical) on my husbands side. I have been able to feel my uterus above my pelvic bone almost from the getgo. My dr is so laid back and doesn't offer anything. (i love her though, she's great.) but she does not do early U/S's unless Im bleeding, etc. And she said she has never detected multiples with any certainty with the doppler. I have my U/S scheduled in 3 long more weeks. She never said anything about the size of my uterus either when she measured. I asked about twins, and she said "we'll see at your U/S...." So who knows. By 6 weeks I was showing. I was in Maternity clothes by 10 weeks. I keep dreaming its twins, I felt early movement with this one (13.5 weeks) so who knows.

My doctor is suspicious of me carrying twins due to me measuring 27 weeks when I just turned 23 weeks, I had been at my doctors just yesterday and he must of listened to heart (S) beating , trying to figure out if is one or two for about 15 minutes and said he has delivered many multiples and has never been able to accuratley determine twins from listening for heart beat , as it may just be an echo of the one babies heart , your heartbeat or an echo it, or of course your 2nd babies heart beat, the best was is u/s good luck , keep us posted!!
