twin mothers are probably undated with questions from moms like me, so please frogive me in advance and thank you for any advice. I am 12 weeks pregnant with my 6th child. We have had this little fear of twins in the back of our minds simply because of how different this pregnancy was, but really it was more of just a silly thing to have a couple laughs, and worries about. Morning sickness was bad this time around after 3 babies with none, belly popped out very quickly and all in all, the symptoms were just way worse. contractions at 10 weeks and suspected fetal movement at 11 1/2 weeks. okay. I know that all this means nothing in the scheme of things. Every pregnancy is is different as the babies they produce and there never seems to be much rhyme or reason to it. so you'll understand my surprise and ultimately panic when I went in for my first appt. yesterday and while looking for the heartbeat, i could hear 2 distinct beats. I didnt say a word, just lay there waiting for dr. to say something. he listened for awhile, then took my pulse while listening. He was not satisfied that it was my pulse so he brought an abdominal ultrasound machine into the room. During this time I'm in a state of quiet panic. My heart is racing and I think I'm a breath away from tears. he turns the machine on and within seconds gives me a "theres only one" all clear. Okay, youd think this would make any silly fear go away, right? unfortunately i cant seem to get past the two heartbeats thing and have this fear now of, what if a second baby is missed directly behind the baby we saw. am I being totally far fetched here? I'd really like some houghts on this. have there been other moms as well who have had two heartbeats, but only one baby in the abdominal ultrasound? Dr. said the sound must have been the same heartbeat bouncing of something inside there to produce 2. all fine and dandy, but still has me a bit anxious. thanks for any input!!!

You can actually pick up a lot of echoes in there from the baby and placenta so that is probably what he was hearing. At 12 weeks, it is pretty clear to see two babies, especially if he were looking for two. My OB never used the doppler on my twins because of the echoes that go on and she wanted to make sure that she could see both babies were doing well. Of course anything is possible, but most twins are missed from 8 weeks and earlier and that is when they are just checking for a viable pregnancy and not mulitples. Try not to worry.

I would be afraid mostly becasue I am already the mother of 5 children ages 2-11. this 6th child was unplanned and honestly it took me a couple months to fully come to terms with being pregnant again. I am a homeschooling mom and have just started a business. so i guess my fear is that having twins would really throw our household into a circus. certainly i would adjust to whatever came my way, but admittedly, there was great fear when the idea was brought to my attention. I'm sure you will be a wonderful mother of 3! good luck in the coming months and wishes for a safe delvery.!

Natasha - Did you do anything special before becoming pregnant with the triplets? My husband and I would love a multiple besides the hard pregnancy and work afterwards. I have been researching herbs to increase that chances but I was interested to find out whether you did anything special?

I am a twin. My mom did not know she was carrying twins (this was inthe mid-70s) until the day we were born. Why? Because our hearts were beating at the same time.... so it is possible that a doctor "wouldn't" pick it up if there were two babies hearts beating simultaneously.
