My first delivery was BAD and now I'm terrified to do it again. For my first contractions started early Friday evening (about 4PM). By 10PM they were averaging 5 minutes apart so I went to hospital. At the hospital I was told I wasn't even 2 CM dilated even though my contractions were 5 min apart so I was sent home. Contraction continued 5 min apart so I walked around my apartment until 3am then I was in a lot of pain and went back in, still no dilation so I was sent home again. At home I took a shower for (no kidding) 2 hours ( I must have used all the hot water in my building ha ha) and walked some more . I went back in again at about 9am -contractions were still about 5 min apart and very painful - this time I was 3cm dilated - they told me to go home and try showering - I LOST IT! I started sobbing, and my husband told them there was no way in h__l we would go home again, and they finally admitted me. Then they told me to walk, so I walked up and down the halls for another 3 or 4 hours then I took yet another shower for a couple of hours (still feel a bit guilty about wasting so much water) and threw up a couple of times. Some time Saturday evening the nurse checked and said I was 5-6cm dilated and could finally receive something for pain if I wanted. For me that epidural was like heaven, after having regular contractions since Friday evening and not having slept since Thursday night. They also gave me that hormone that speeds up contractions at the same time. I was able to sleep a little between being woken by the blood pressure monitor. Then at about 4:30AM Sunday morn the nurse checked and I was 9cm dialated and said I should start pushing. I pushed for about 2 hours with no success. Then the Doctor finally came to see me (for the first time) and said they would need to use a vacuum. So they wheeled me into an op room and used the vacuum which didn't work, so next she tried forceps which finally worked and my son was born at 7:15 Sunday morning. During the birth I sustained 3rd degree tearing and also haemorrhaged when the placenta tore when it was being removed. But the dr got the bleeding under control fairly quickly. I love my son to death and do not regret anything, but now that I'm thinking about having another child I am terrified to go threw that again. Did anyone else have a bad first delivery and good subsequent ones?
Oh, and I also found out four mths postpartum that I had severe postpartum thyroiditis (first hyper and then hypo at about 5.5 mths postpartum, which caused me to experience months of unexplained ppd before I was diagnosed) which I was told was likely caused by traumatic birth, that has caused permanent damage, so now I have permanent hypothyroidism.

I am so sorry that most exciting (yet excruciating) time of pregnancy was so horrific for you, no women should have to go through being sent home so many times and treated like you didnt really matter. My advise, try again. If you truely want another angel, dont a__sume another labor will be just like your first. If it would make you more confortable, see a different doctor, and another hospital. do a little reseach before becoming pregnant to see what another facility would do in your situation. Good luck, i wish you and your family the best. :)

I have had three labours, my first I didnl't know I was in labour (34wks and 6cms at the hospital with waters broken!), the second - DEAR GOD! If it had been my first there would have been no more! My third was induced and was the easiest out of the three. I can't understand why they would give you any pain medication early in the labour as there is absolutly NO REASON to wait until you are in active labour to administer the drugs. They could have at least offered you Gas & Air!! As for being told to push at 9cm I am not surprised you suffered tearing and had no success in pushing. What part of 10cms do they not understand? I would imagine you felt bruised inside and out after that!! I have known people to have problems in all their labours and others to have a nightmare first and easy second. To be honest from reading above it sounds like poor management on the hospital side and at 3cms over here you are admitted immediately. Anything less you will usually be sent home but only if you are within 5miles of the hospital. Any further and they will keep you there as soon as contractions are regular. I can understand your fear as I was the same with my third but think of it this way - you have been through the worst pain and have a gorgeous son to show for it. There is no way another labour will be that bad!

How old is your first? My first was was really bad also many many hours, pushed for over 4 hours, contractions stopped at 10 cm and body started to shut down. It was very bad but I had my 2nd 22 months later and it was a breeze! I was in labor for only like 11hrs and pushed for like 5min and she was 1/2lb bigger then my son. I dont know if it was because they were so close together. I also have hypothyroid but didnt when I had my first 2. I'm now prego with #3 and when I have him/her my youngest will be just about 5 so I'm a little worrried it might be hard again but the way I look at it even if it is 3 days of pain, a life time of having that child is worth it and wouldnt stop me from doing it again.
