What does the doctor do? My husband thinks he wants to go with me for it - is that appropriate? We just had our first BFP over the Easter weekend, after ttc #1 for 2 years...

Hi & many congratulations!! Regarding your first appointment (known as "booking appointment") I can only base it on my experience here in the UK which was as follows: the midwife started drawing up the record of my pregnancy ( "Notes") and asked me to keep my notes with me from then on, they were filed with the hospital after the birth. The midwife wanted to know the date of last period to give an estimation of the due date, and asked about previous pregnancies. I was asked a few questions about me and my partner, and any family illnesses / health issues. I had my urine tested for infections and suger and did my blood pressure. My weight was measured and the midwife felt my abdomen to a__sess the height of the uterus. I was also asked which hospital I wanted to have the baby in. I was given information on diet and screening for downs syndrome etc, and advised to take folic acid for the first trimester. The midwife also booked my next appointment, and booked me in for a scan - in my choice of hospital the first scan isnt done til 20 weeks though some counties offer a dating scan at 12 weeks to confirm due date. I arranged privately for a "Nuchal scan" which is a non-invasive test for downs syndrome which I had to pay for privately. I cant remember at what point they took the blood tests... I think it may have been at the 12 weeks stage - anyway, they will want to test for various things and you will be offered an HIV test as standard procedure. The first appointment is a good time to air any questions or concerns, so take advantage of that. I hope all goes well for you and congratulations again... it's such an exciting time!!

by the way... I was told it was fine to bring my partner with me for the first appointment, but I didnt.. in my opinion he didnt miss much - I think the time off work that was better saved for scans later on etc..

Thank you for your answers! Tomorrow's the big day... Unfortunately my husband is on travel for work, so he can't go after all. But the doctor's office a__sured me that they won't be doing an ultrasound yet. So, I don't think he will miss much. Austynsmommy you bring up a good point though - I will have to make sure I study up on his family history. Are you all pregnant too then? We think we're 9 weeks.
