I am a commercial real estate advisor working strictly on commission. I have been employed with my current employer less than six months and am concerned about telling him about my pregnancy. I read the Pregnancy Act and am aware of my rights. However, I am not sure how to break the news to him. I feel that despite his understanding nature, he may be apprehensive about my continued employment. Any suggestions?!?!

If I were you, I would just tell him straight out. Also, you should tell him what your plans are (if you plan to continue to work say how much and until when). If he is apprehensive about your pregnancy, your telling him how you plan to handle everything should help. Good luck!

I fully agree with Ann. I waited a little bit to tell my boss's as I was a bit nervous. When I did tell them they congradulated me. I told them I planned to stay at work till around the time of my due date, and that I planned on returning to work after maternity leave.

I was nervous telling my boss...I am a personal a__sistant to the owner of the company...and he never had children and is very jumpy around pregnant women. It was actully funny how I told him...I had an appointment on Friday to see my OB to confirm my pregnancy, on Thursday I had really bad morning sick, and my boss felt bad for me thinking it was the flu and said I could go home for the rest of the week. So on Monday I was at work, and he comes in and asked if I am any better and what the dr had to say and I said the dr said I won't be cured for 9 months...he actully congradulated me. And has been really nice about everthing. Though now that I am showing he freaks out a little over some of my tasks...but ka sara sara

The day after I found out that I was in fact pregnant I told people at work. In the event I had bad morning sickness they knew why I was away from my desk. I was fortunate and I worked all 40 weeks of my pregnancy with little to no complications. They were glad to know though.

I also am nervouse about telling ,my boss, because I do not know what to tell her yet. I work in a high school and it didn't quit work out to have the baby during the summer months off, it will be early November. I do not think I want to go back to work, but have not decided for sure. I know it is the right thing to do, stay home and raise the baby myself, I just wonder how many women wish they would have gone back to work after being home with the baby ALL day every day :) I want to tell my boss but leave my options open.

Always tell your boss you are coming back. My maternity leave is paid for by Short Term Disability. If I say I'm not coming back afterwards I get nothing. If I say I am coming back I get 6 weeks paid at 60% salary. Then I also have a total of 12 weeks for FMLA where I am off work and my job is held for me (but those second 6 weeks is unpaid). Then if I decide not to come back they will find my replacement. Employers know that there is a chance that a pregnant employee may not come back after maternity leave. They do start looking for a back up for your position just in case so they aren't left in the mud. So don't worry about them...worry about you.
