Hello ladies. Just wondering if anyone has any advice about how to "break the news" to an employer? I have only been with the company a month, but I signed the job offer before I knew I was pregnant...a month before I started! I am now just finished my first trimester (to the day!) and want to tell them soon...any thoughts?

Just request a meeting with your boss and tell him/her that you are pregnant and you waited to tell them until the first trimester was over just to make sure the pregnancy was going to be ok. Do you have a plan for how much time you want to take off after the baby is born? You might want to get that information together so you can start planning your leave and your boss can find a temp to fill in until you return.

Yeah, I was just going to sit down with him for a few mins and just tell him that it was a surprise to us and, yes, that I was advised to wait until the end of the first tri. In Ontario we get 1yr mat. leave, so they would have to contract the job for a year...I guess I was just feeling uncomfortable b/c I've only been a month here, but it has been going really well, I know my job, and get along with everyone very well. Thx for the advice. :)

Congrats by the way! And don't feel uncomfortable..it's called living life, and life does happen outside of work wether employers realize it or not. =P You'll do fine!

chrissi, I just told my boss yesterday. I didn't make a formal meeting about it. He was walking by my office, and I just said, "Hey can you come in for a minute and shut the door?" I think he thouhgt I was going to quit, and he was really happy when I told him the news (he gave me a high 5--man thing I guess). I was nervous, because I have a very demanding job!! Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks ladies, makes me feel better! I know I shouldn't be nervous, its just b/c I've only been there a short time. My job isn't "demanding", but they wanted a certain personality and certain experience that I had...I guess I'm feeling a little guilty too. Who knows. And I agree Ann, I wasn't going to make it "formal" either, maybe just at the end of the day let him know. Thank you ladies for the advice, feeling a lot better about it! :) Let you know how it went! Wish me luck!

Hi everyone, so I told them this afternoon. Just asked my supervisor for a few minutes of his time, and just told him that we had recently found out, and were surprised by the news but that we are very excited about it, and he smiled and agreed, that's very exciting, and thank you for letting me know. LOL - I think he felt a bit uncomfortable, men aren't usually good at these things! But I just told him that I wanted to let them know its not until february but I wanted to give them lots of notice. Anyway, hopefully that's that, and I can carry on working and not worry about it anymore!
Thanks for all the words of advice ladies, I appreciate it! :) PHEW! Now I just hope that it doesn't come back to bite me in the b___t!! ahaha

Chrissi, I am glad everything went well. It is hard to tell what to think at some men's reactions. It seems like most of them don't want to hear much about what they consider to be "female" things. Have you told everyone else now at your office? I just told people this week (after I told my boss). It was exciting but somewhat overwhelming!

Hey! I've only told two of the gals in here, just happened they were in the lunchroom and I told them! They were like "are you joking?", but in a good way, cause the other a__sistant was like "we finally found someone GOOD!" They had been going thru ppl in my position like tissues...lol. Anyway, but they were excited for me, now I have to tell others, which is a bit akward...how did you tell people?

I just told a few people at the office. Things have a way of spreading at my office! I just told my dad and stepson over the weekend, too. Do you have paid maternity leave at your job? Do you plan to go back after the baby arrives?

Hi Ann, I see that's how this office is too! LOL! After my supervisor, I told a few of the girls, and the HR Mgr said he could tell on Friday!! Oh dear, I guess its more obvious than i thought...anyhow, they have all been very happy and congratulated me, so my worries have subsided...I will come back after mat. leave, yes. In Ontario we get 1yr mat. leave based on some criteria of course, and the gov. pays out the mat. leave. Its 55% of wages up to a certain amount. Not great, but hey, make the best of it and enjoy the first year, right?! :)

Not great??? Compared to the US, that is unbelievable excellent! I only get 12 weeks paid at 100%. We could never live off of only 55% of my income, but that is awesome you can take a whole year off work! For my job, I talk to people in many different countries. In most of Europe, Canada, and Australia, it seems like they do much more for working mothers than in the US. Luckily, we can afford for my dh to take more time w/the baby, but a lot of people here can't do that either. And even worse, lots of people don't have any paid leave at all!!
