28 And A Full Time Student

I am a mature student and finish my second year of an Occupational Therapy degree in June (then one more year to go). I am also getting married in August having been with my partner for 6 years. We definitely want children and think we'd both make great parents but I am worried as I will be 29 when I finish my degree. We have discussed trying to get pregnant straight after the wedding this year but if we conceived it would mean I'd be pregnant during my third year of Uni and I would have the baby just after I qualified. The problem is, I would have no maternity pay when the baby was born because I wouldn't be employed. We have our own house and my fiance a good enough job but maternity pay would stop us scrimping our money so much. Also I might later struggle to get a part time job as a junior occupational therapist as they are mainly full time posts at this level. I know it would be so much more sensible to wait until I graduate and get a job and then try to get pregnant but I am terrified of it taking ages and time running out. We definitely want two or three children. If it was just one I don't think I'd be as worred about waiting another year. Anyone been in a similar situation of a full time mature student?

Hi, I don't know your exact situation but I do know that I raise my son on my own and with no mat pay. Things fall into place. Now if you think you would have to go on a__sistance or something then that's a different story. You sound like to have your heart in the right place and that your finances are going to be 'okay' I agree (not knowing you) that you could start now and let it fall into place. If you conceive right away you will know you made the right decision. Good luck and like I said I don't know the situation. Just giving an opinion.

Thanks Shauna thats a really nice post. This is really sad but I'm going to answer my own question cos I've been thinking and think I've made a decision. I am going to wait until next summer when hopefully I will be qualified (fingers crossed!) and be in a job. I'll then try to conceive and will still get at least 8 months working experience while I am pregnant, before maternity leave and going part time. And if it takes longer to conceive then at least I am getting more work experience! I think if I waste my degree by not getting a job, being skint for the last 3 years and going through all the stressful times of doing boring a__signments will be for nothing!
