I am 31 years old and I don't have children yet. My husband and I aren't quite ready and may want to wait until I'm 32. At what age is downs syndrome or other birth defects more prevalent?

35 and up is at higher risk for downs syndrome (also at higher risks for complications). Like "you are safe" said, birth defects happen in women of all ages. My step mothers friend just had a baby with down syndrome and she was 39.

I think that it is supposed to be over 35 or around that age. I don't think that should stop you from trying though as there is always a chance of birth defects no matter what your age. My auntie had her first baby last year at 43 years old and my mum just had her seventh baby at 42 years old. Both of the babys are fine.

The older you get the more risk. 35 and up is the ager where they start recommending screenings and amnios..........At age 25, a woman has about a 1-in-1,250 chance of having a baby with Down syndrome; at age 30, a 1-in-1,000 chance; at age 35, a 1-in-400 chance; at age 40, a 1-in-100 chance; and at 45, a 1-in-30 chance......(taken from....http://www.modimes.org/professionals/681_1155.asp)

I think Bonnie is correct. The risk SHARPLY increase for Down's after 35. Doctors consider you "advanced maternal age" after 35. Do you think one year will change the risk much for you and DH? On the other hand, keep in mind that it takes an average of 6 mos to coceive even if you hit the timming just right every month. And the older we get, the longer it may take. Maybe if you start now or in 6 mos, you'll be pregnant when you're 32! Or maybe you'll try now and get pregnant the first month. You really can't plan these things that specifically! best to you!
