I have been pumping to give my nipples a break, because they have been sore. I have noticed that after a couple of hours in the refrigerator that the milk looks like it has curdled. Has anybody else had this problem???? Please help me!

It's not spoiled, it's separated. Breast milk is not pasteurized, and so it still contains the cream. Just gently swirl it to mix the cream back in.

Breastmilk doesn't have cream. It does separate & this is completely normal, the foremilk is much thinner than the hindmilk & tends to separate. It can vary in color also, so don't be alarmed if you think it looks kinda blue or green or orangish on different days.

Tomato, to-mah-to...geez, okay, so it's the 'thicker" part - it is NOT hindmilk, because there is more hindmilk than foremilk. If you look at separated b___stmilk, you would see that the ratio is reversed and there is less "cream-like substance" than the thinner part.

All unhomogenized milk has cream.

Both of you ladies are correct. Breast milk does have cream and it is called hindmilk. If you pumped and put in the refrigerator and did not see much cream, then you would know that you have pumped mostly formilk.

You will get more hind milk if you pump after nursing. The baby is much more efficiant than a pump.

Which is better? Fore or hind?

Both are necessary. The foremilk quenches thirst and the hindmilk fills 'em up. One of the common problems a b___stfed baby will have is not getting enough hindmilk; if the poo is yellow and has small "seeds" in it (I think they look like tapioca) then your darling is getting enough hindmilk - if there's an imbalance, the poo will be green and won't have the seeds.

Jaime is right. If you notice that you have a lot of foremilk and the baby's poo is green, you can pump off some foremilk before nursing so that baby gets some more of the hindmilk. I pump every day somewhere between 4 and 8 ounces and usually there are equal amounts of for & hind milk in the bottle. Usually I will pump one side while baby nurses on the other side at one or two feedings.

Thanks Jamie-that info on yellow poop is helpful! (Strange things that moms say...). Anyway, really is good info to know.

It's just the cream that comes to the top. Just give it a shake to mix it back up.
