Difficulty Latching On Due To Tongue Tie

I was told in hospital that my daughter is Tongue Tied which makes it difficult for her to latch on. I thought I'd mention it as I noticed a few of you too have had problems. The big fancy name for it is Ankyloglossia. That kind of elastic bit under the tongue is suppose to recede before birth, in some cases it doesn't and holds the tongue back so it won't stick out far enough to latch on properly. It can correct itself as bub grows because the tongue does continue to grow. I'm having it snipped tomorrow. I though long and hard about it because I thought it sounded barbaric. In actual fact, midwives used to use their fingernail to quickly slash it at birth. Then as br___tfeeding phased out so did this procedure. This tongue tie can mean that baby tires of feeding and takes longer and needs more frequent feeds. Hope this is useful.

My sister was tongue tied and the dentist eventually snipped it for her when she was in her late teens. It was quite comical when she tried stick her tongue out at someone. lol

Lol. That would have been funny. I've heard of dentists doing it too. If you have tongue tie you aren't able to lick excess food from around your teeth after a meal and can result in bad teeth and gums. It can be hereditary, I had no idea where it came from until my baby was 2 wks old, my partner's Mum told me she had to have hers snipped. I knew it wasn't from me, I can tie an Alans Snake in a knot with mine :o)

;o)..........We took Ashleigh to get her tongue fixed, she now has a normal tongue. The Doctor said to be ready to feed her straight away, took her into another room and seriourly he was back within the minute. The 2 nights since have been so different. Rather than taking over an hour or a hour and a half to feed she has been only half an hour. Unreal, half an hour and she's fed, changed, burped and back into bed.

Oh Yeh it's funny to watch her rolling and lolling around in her gob with this look of bewilderment in her eyes. So cute. She's made a few 'clucking' noises since she's found she can get it stuck on the roof of her mouth. But wow it feels soooo good to be able to crawl back into bed so soon after dragging myself out of it.

That's her tongue doing the rolling and lolling by the way, I haven't started her on the snakes just yet.

LOL Yes, the snakes are pretty advanced for a two week old. Maybe in a month or two.
