My week old son makes movements with his mouth and hands like he's nearly constantly hungry, despite me nursing on demand (often). Should I be concerned?

I wouldn't be. Very normal for a newborn. As long as he is having enough pee/poop diapers he is getting enough. As they get older, it won't be as often. If you want to talk to an expert, kellymom.com has great advice!

Thanks, I'll take a look. I tried hand expressing and a manual pump tonight, yet can only get half an ounce at a time. I hope I don't have to stop.

You don't have to stop. All you need is information and support. Contact your local La Leche League leader. They should be listed in your phone book or the hospital will have a leader's number. You can call them any time you need help. They also have monthly meetings where you can meet other b___stfeeding moms and get lots of information. lalecheleague.org

Babies are more efficient than pumps...wait until you get a diagnosis of failure to thrive before you think you can't b___stfeed. At a week old, most babies will eat frequently; they're still learning how, after all. Also, your milk may not be fully in yet. Drink LOTS of water, get plenty of rest, and eat healthy. It's very important that you don't try to diet yet, because your body needs extra calories to produce milk. I second the recommendation that you contact either LLL or a lactation consultant. HTH, GL

Thanks for the advice and support. I'll talk to the lactation consultant again and look into LLL meetings.
