My baby boy is 6 months old. I have been thinking about giving him a couple of ounces of formula in the evenings only when he seems tired but hungry and I have nursed him as much as I can. I understand about growth spurts, and I know that my supply will not increase to meet his needs if I give him the bottle. I am just curious if anyone has br___tfed for a year or longer and supplemented occasionally.

no...sorry....we b___stfed the whole time, and ended when she self-weaned at 15 months. but it kept getting easier and easier...so I didn't mind.

It really did diminish when I supplemented, and noticeably more so when he started eating more real food and wanted me less. It kept dwindling down till I was at the point I thought I wasnt making any more milk and then he weaned because I don't think anything was there. I f I had to do it again, I wouldn't supplement because I didn't want to stop nursing so soon!

I had the same experience as "for me" except I didn't want to quit beastfeeding at 4 months, so I worked on getting my supply back up and cutting back on the formula. We are now only b___stfeeding. My advice is to stay away from the formula. Breastfeeding is easier anyways. We're at 7 months and my supply is still going strong.

I b___stfeed and formula feed daily. I've never had a problem with supply.

Kathryn, How long have you been doing this without effecting your supply? I'm wondering about doing it too.

I supplemented and b___stfed for 6 months I used to nurse in the morning, night and nap time and bottles in between Since the baby is 6 month old he wouldn't get nipple confusion I would mix brest milk and formula together until he got adjusted to the formula then just be able to nurse and give a straight formula bottle I never lost my milk if you nurse the same amount each day you will keep the same supply

I do both and my son is 8 months. He gets about 6 ounces of formula a day. There is a chance your supply will go down so you have to decide if it's worth taking that risk. For me it was and luckily I didn't have an issue.

Thanks for all the advice ladies. I have decided not to supplment. I have been using the free can of formula I got from my doctor's office only to mix his cereal in the evening, but I haven't been using it for bottles.

If you give baby formula, just use a b___st pump to stimulate your nipples and keep your milk supply up. Worked for me. The only reason I would give him formula though is when I had to leave him with grandma and I didn't happen to have a bottle of b___stmilk handy. Don't let people make you feel guilty about giving formula . . . but if you can b___stfeed without problems, its best for you and your baby to do so.
