My son is 3 weeks old today. Since he was born I have been br___tfeeding him. He seems to want to feed constantly. He will feed for about 20 - 30 minutes on one side, then another 20 - 30 minutes on the other. He will then get sleepy...for about 10 minutes. Then cry and fuss for a 1/2 hour and want to eat again. Last night I ended up feeding him for almost 2.5 hours straight with only crying fits in between. Then he slept for about 2 hours and we started all over again. Does this sound normal? Or could I have low milk supply. I am considering switching to formula. I get no sleep and am exhausted...I fall asleep while he is feeding. After a while of feeding this way my br___ts start to ache. Thanks for any advice.

My son is 7 weeks old. I let him nurse as long and as often as he wants. I don't mean to be rude, but I'm sure you knew when you have a baby, you don't get much sleep. Try napping when he naps. It does get better as they get older. You may not appreciate it now, but in the future, you will wish that you could sit and watch your newborn nurse. Good luck.

I knew I wouldn't be getting much sleep. My main concern is that he may not be getting enough to eat. Friends of mine are b___stfeeding and their babies do not nurse for so long or so frequently. They also aren't crying almost constantly while awake. I just want to make sure my baby is getting the proper nutrition.

After one week of feeding the pettern stays the same until 4 months. Here is a guide. I looked it up in my old From Here Through Maturnity Book. The baby(b) should6-8 diapers in a 24 period...pale colored urine...soft easy pa__sed stools...regained bithwieght by two weeks...gain 4-7 ozper week for the first 4 months...wakens to feed 8 times in a 24 hr period.. Groiwth spurts are a perod of a few days when your baby feeds more often frequent feeding will increase you milk supply for the growing baby's needs. Growth can occcure at anytime. Unusally 2-3 weeks 4-6 weeks 2 and a half - 3 months. Vitimin d should be given to a b___stfeed bay too.

To Lisa - why supplement the food God gave us to feed our children? Not all b___stfed children need vitamin D, and indeed, supplementing b___stmilk, without the advice of a doctor on an individual basis, can result in harmful overdoses for your child.

sounds to me like a growth spurt! please please, don't be dicouraged! keep on b___stfeeding! please! it DOES get better! i almost started formula and i am so happy and glad now that i didn't because - believe it or not - b___stfeeding is now actually FUN! i never thought that bf can be fun! another thing to consider id methods to calm baby, which shouldn't always be done with the b___st. there's a great book by harvey karp "the happiest baby on the block" there is also a dvd, which saved me and my husbands lives and got us 2 - 3 hours more sleep a night before the little one slept throught the night.. gotta go - someone is very hungry ;)

I use formula and b___st milk. I asked his doctor first and he said this would be fine. Breast milk goes through them very fast and his body is growing so fast. Because of this they are constantly eating but it does get better. My son used to b___st feed 30 minutes on each side and then still act hungry (now it's 15 minutes on each side). I could never ever leave the house because everytime I'd get ready to go he'd want to eat again. That is when I started pumping and adding formula. You just have to see what works best for you. I would recommend if you do use formula to also use b___st milk too. I find with just supplementing, formula adds a lot to our monthly budget. Why not take advantage of the cost savings by using your own b___st milk too.

My daughter did the same thing and the Dr said that is was normal. It is called cluster feeding and it will come and go. She is 9 months old and hasn't done it in months it will pa__s. For now just try warm compresses while he isn't nursing and try to sleep anytime he is. Good luck and try to stay positive that what you are giving him is the best that you can give.

At 3 weeks babies go through a growth spurt, and in a sense you don't have enough milk for them, what used to be enough milk now is not enough. They need to almost constantly be at your b___st during this period to increase your milk supply as their need is increasing. Just feed that baby as often as he cries and eventually the feedings will have long time in between. best of luck.

Another thing I did to help when I knew my son wasn't hungry was to hold him in the cradle position with a pacifier in his mouth against my clothed b___st. If he's really not hungry he goes for this. It's been a life saver for my sister who babysits him while I'm at work. Sometimes they just want the comfort of being close to you and sucking on something.

My three week old has had several days like this, not in a row. It seems like maybe growth spurt to me, they say they nurse more often to increase your supply. I too have had thoughts of switching, feeling like he's not getting enough, but I think nature will provide and this too will pa__s.

Jen, how are things going now? No, b/fding for 2.5 hours is not normal. Is that how he is often or was it just short term?
