Switching sides often sometimes helps, but you want to make sure baby is getting hind milk. You can also try rubbing his cheeks. It will get better though. My son was the same way, it won't last. Good luck.

my baby was like that too - he is 1 month old now and he has learned to suck efficiently. He was sleeping at the b___st and therefore not sucking - which decreased my milk supply by a lot - he wasn't being fed and got weak. I attended a breasfeeding cla__s twice - there, they taught me how to keep him awake and how to motivate him to suck (ma__sage the b___st as you feed him) it took about a week but he learned to suck, my milk supply has increased and he only falls asleep when he is no longer hungry. Good luck.

Try "switch feeding" - if he stops sucking, falls asleep at the b___st soon after starting. Sit him up, give his back a rub and switch over to the other side. Do this several times over the course of a feed and he will get the hind milk. It's time consuming - but worth it. Once he's feeding more efficiently you can revert to normal feeding pattern.

i've heard that it helps if the baby is not too warm and cosy, so use a lighter blanket or take it off completely in warmer weather. i've also heard playing with their toes and stroking their feet helps, i don't quite know why, but think it helps keep them more alert/on guard.
