My baby boy is 5 days old, and I'm br___tfeeding him. I was wondering how many minutes to br___tfeed at each feeding? I am doing anywhere from 10-15 minutes each br___t. My nipples are already really sore and are starting to get chapped so I've been doing 10 minutes.........is this enough food for my baby? I also notice that when I'm done feeding on one br___t he gets too tired to feed on the other one, so I only get about a total of 15-20 minutes in on each feeding. Is this normal or what?? I'm concerned that this is not enough?? Thoughts?

I was always told 10 min. on each side. When you feed the next feeding though, start with the b___st you left off with last time first. If he's falling asleep- which new babies do a LOT, try burping him first, then onto the next side. Don't worry about him starving though.... he won't let you do that! He may eat more often, but he won't starve! Sounds like you're doing fine! It can be an adventure that's for sure! Good luck to you! Tara

My baby for the first few days would feed for about 15 minutes each side, and from then on only ever fed for about 5-7 minutes from one side per feed, every two hours and he was putting on 300grams a week for the first few weeks. If your baby is hungry he will keep on drinkingl He is probably a guzzler like mine.

I agree with owensark, your baby will let you know when he is hungry and as once you learn how to read his cries you won't feel as concerned.
As far as the sore nipples I cannot say enough about this ointment I was given in the hospital called Lansinoh. My daughter is now 9 weeks old and I have been able to nurse her this hole time (with alot of practice and patients). The day before I left the hospital with her I was in such bad shape. My nipples were raw and almost bleeding. It hurt so bad I didn't think I would continue at home. Luckily the lactation consultant came in and asked me how I was doing. She gave me this onitment to put on after I was done feeding my daughter. This is the best thing EVER! Once the initial pain is gone it gets easier. Don't give up, you can do it. Good Luck

you should always feed one b___st untill its empty not a bit from each, because at the beggining of each b___st is foremilk which is thirst quenching after approx 20-30 mins the baby gets to the hind milk which is thick and fatty to put on weight, if you feed 10 mins each side baby will only get foremilk, this will not satosfy him enough and wont help with colic, when one b___st goes totally soft and you cant pinch any milk out you can offer 10 mins of other side, if your baby apears tired when feeding i was told to strip them to the nappy, it helps if they are not all hot and cosy they just fall asleap, you need some kamilosan or lanolin cream for nipples and get a support worker/midwife to check your latch, but mine were bleeding chapped for a few weeks while i got used to it, good luck
