Sterilizing Pump Bottles

Do you really have to sterilize your pump parts and bottles in a sterilizer? Or is it okay to just put it in the top rack of the dishwasher or hand wash in warm soapy water and air dry?

To be perfectly honest, I've never sterilized. I didn't know you should.

The instructions for my pump said I should (using their fancy sterilizer.) I am wondering if it is more pertinent if one has well water or something, as we have city water.

i only sterilized the pump the first time after that with warm soapy water i also sterilized it after finishing an antibiotic as for the bottles i only sterilized the nipples before the initial use and after the antibiotic i didnt sterilize the rest of the bottle peices though ito sterilize them i just put the parts/nipples in steaming hot tap water and let it sit until the water cooled

I also only sterilized mt pump & bottles before the first use & just wash them in warm soapy water now. My son is 5 months old & never been sick, I wouldn't worry about it.

hey, i have the medela PIS and was wondering how to go about sterilizing the parts. can you put them in the dishwasher and not ruin anything?

I have washed my pump in the dishwasher, but I find that it generally get cleaned better if I wash it by hand in hot soapy water.

If I pump more than once a day I wash it with soapy water at night but during the day I just rinse it out with scalding hot water and air dry for later.
