I plan on br___tfeeding when the baby gets here and I do not want him to be given a bottle. I heard it could take a few days for the actual milk to come in.. will he be okay with just the colestreum (sp?) Im afraid that if hes given a bottle at all it will make succesful breasfeeding harder for us

The colostrum is plenty in the first few days until the milk comes in. The lactation consultant at the hospital told me that one tsp of colostrum is nutritionally equivalent to 2-3 oz of formula. It also contains lots of antibodies that will help his immunity. Also, let them know you are bf and to not give the baby a pacifier or bottle. My son did get a bottle his first night in the nursery b/c his sugar was low, but luckily, it did not interfere with nursing.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. I heard that it's got lot's of nutrients but I just didn't know if it would be enough.

You will go for your follow up visit and they will weigh the little guy to make sure he is gaining. Don't worry, he won't starve. I remember the doctor saying if my milk didn't come in that day that I'd have to supplement. He was losing and a little jaundice. Luckily my milk came in that day and he started gaining.

dont worry about that. Mine did not come in until about 4 or 5 days later. It was upsetting at first. He was 7 7 at birth. When we left hosp he was down to 7 2. BUT at our 2wk ck up he was already 8 11. And we just had our 2 mth ck up he was 14 1. I strictly bf and he want even take a bottle now. HANG IN THERE

You are right about the bottles. I know lots of people that had problems because the hospital gave bottles. Be strict about it. Make a sign to post in the ba__senet NO BOTTLES. Don't let them take the baby to the nursery, keep the baby in your room with you. Colostrum is the perfect first food and you don't need anything else. Just stick to what you want to do and don't let others interfere. Be strong--Enjoy!

Don't worry about weight gain until you get an official diagnosis of failure to thrive...my daughter lost a lot of her birthweight in the hospital, and didn't really gain it back until after her 2 week check up. I was very worried I wouldn't be able to b___stfeed, but the doctor agreed to let me continue til her 1 month check...by then, she had started gaining well, and so I didn't have to supplement.

Do a lot of hospitals give that baby a bottle without the mother's approval? My hospital was the opposite, they pushed for b___stfeeding. It was not until day 5 when he still had jaundice that his doctor suggested supplementing.

Your baby will be fine with colostrum only. I think my milk came in around the 2-3 day. Almost all babies lose weight when they leave the hospital. That is nothing to worry about. I think they should be back to their birth weight by 2 weeks and mine were always way over that.
