I too bcp before pregnancy and was prescribed a progesterone only pill now that I am bf. I just put the order form in the mail today, so I haven't actually started to take it yet. My doc did say to call her when I was finished bf and she would switch me back to my old bcp. Other bc you can use are diaphragms, condoms, female condoms, and possibly an IUD. I would talk to your OB about your options if I was you. As for how long to "bf before the baby doesn't need it anymore," the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends bf for a year to get the max benefits, but a lot of people on this site have gone as long as 2+ years. I will try to go for the year if I can.

I use a regular pill, but had to monitor my milk production at first, to make sure it didn't cause problems with supply.
