Lesley, where do you live? My daughter was given the injection - and you're right, it's not an "option" - they didn't bother to ask me.

sorry, i know this is about vitamins while b___stfeeding, but i'm interested in this vit k injection - for us it was an option with our first, we had to sign papers and such, but this time around i want to decline the shot and do it through pills. i think it's safer - the injection info actually states that some children have died while getting it! that is terrible. lesley, what do you do? what kind of pills - prescription?

Yes I had to sign forms when my son got the injection. They ask you to sign in while you still pregnant rather than after the birth. This time they are brown capsules. You snip the top off and squirt it in bbies mouth. To be honest I'm still not sure why I am giving him it. If b___stmilk doesn't provide it why only give him it the first 10 weeks.... why not the whole time you b___stfeed. I never really thought about it before. I just thought the midwives know what they on about so took it. I am going to ask about it next week. You get the capsules just before you leave the hospital.

Lesley- are you one of the October moms that was overdue and had your baby in November? Did you end up having yours 11/7 by any chance? That is when I had mine.

i think the reason they only get it (the vit k) for a short period of time is because that's the time when babies who may suffer from bleeding internally will suffer from it. after that, it's not really a risk.....there is vit k in b___stmilk, just not "enough" so they say/

Bah. Babies survived for centuries on b___stmilk when there was no alternative - why do doctors feel the need to mess with it now?

Yes Christy its me! I did have him on 7th November! I didn't have to get induced in the end. Went into labour myself at 2:50 in the morning and had him at 5:24.

As long as you are eating well and taking vitamins you dont need to give them to your baby. Many babies just spit them up anyway. Babies on formula need extra vitamins to make up for what they are not getting from b___stmilk. The formula is hard on the digestive tract and can cause intestinal bleeding and loss of nutrients.

I am supposed to give Ben Tri-Vi-Sol 3-5x/week. I have given it to him once. I am torn about it because, while I believe he needs the vitamin D (we don't get much sun here), I don't think he needs the iron. I don't want him to develop ricketts, but I don't want him to OD on iron. Is there a version of this supplement without iron?

Christy, if you take a vitamin or supplement that has vitamin d in it, your baby will get enough through your b___stmilk.

Christy - there is a version w/o iron. they usually sell it right next to the one with iron.

Thanks. I will look for the D-Vi-Sol or the Tri Vi Sol w/o iron.
