I have a 17 week old baby and he is exlusively br___t fed. I am just wondering if one of the reasons he doesn't sleep more than 3-4 hours is maybe his feedings are too short? Sometimes he will eat for 30 minutes but usually it's more like 10-15 and then he falls asleep while eating. I have a really hard time waking him to continue feeding him. I've tried diaper changes, etc, and then putting him back on the br___t. He just goes to sleep and uses me for a pacifier but is not eating. Of course I don't want to encourage that. Also can anyone tell me if they always feed on both sides? He seems to just like one side per feeding but I am thinking perhaps he is not getting full enough and that is why he doesn't sleep for long stretches of time. I was also wondering when any of you br___t feeding moms started cereal and how much you gave them? Thanks for any advice you may have.

Maybe try switching sides after about 5 mins on each. Some babies are really good suckers and can empty the b___st that quick, sometimes they do just like one b___st though.

This is what I did and I'm not sure if it'll help you or not but I figure any advice is better than none. I used to feed my son on one side until he was done. I could tell by the sound of his swallowing. If he sucked more than 4 times without swallowing, I knew he was just using me as a pacifier. Then I'd do the same thing on the second side. If he fell asleep, and I couldn't wake him up, I'd let him sleep for 2-3 hours and then get him up and change his diaper and then offer the b___st again. I found if he got 10-12 feedings during the day, he'd then sleep through the night, at least normally. I got most of this help from the book "What to Expect the First Year". I started giving him rice cereal once per day at 4 months. Once he seemed bored with that I gave him stage one sweet potatoes then followed by bananas. From 4-6 months it's really just a learning experience with solid food and not necessary. It also may help a little with him sleeping through the night. Let us know if anything works for you.
