Mealtime Is Soooo Long

I am getting tired of women (NOT on this site, just so you don't get all mad at me) who complain that it takes 20 minutes to feed their babies. Ben is 8 weeks old takes 30-60 minutes, averaging around 40 minutes. Anyone else have a feeder that takes this long to eat? I don't think he is eating the whole time, but if I try to cut it short, there is h__l to pay- lol! Have any of you who've had a little one like this get them to take less time to eat and if so, what'd you do?

Both of my guys like/d to nurse all the time. I can't/couldn't lay them down or they would wake up right away. I wouldn't be able to function without my sling. At least I can get things done while I am nursing. My guy is getting better at length of feeds now at 5 months he still likes to suck a lot though (I don't/won't give a soother) He also loves to play on the floor by himself and roll to this and that. So my arms get a rest now.

It takes between 1 and 2 hours for us. I read a book or talk on the phone. I figure that rather than get upset about I should just accept it. I enjoy the cuddling and the book, so how bad could it really be? I figure it won't last much longer, and then I'll probably miss it. It is very relaxing.

Sharon and lisa- WoW. How many times a day are we talking about then? I guess we have it pretty good at 40-60 minutes 7-8 time a day- LOL!

Blake used to take that long to eat. I think somewhere in his 2nd or 3rd month he became a more efficient eater. He is now 7 months old, almost, and it takes him between 5-15 minutes for a full meal now.

My son seems to take longer at night than during the day. Daytime feeds are about 20-30 mins, while nighttime feeds are about 40-60 mins. Don't know why, probably because we try to space the nighttime feeds a bit longer (feeding more often during the day) and so he gets hungrier.

Ahh, don't you love being the human pacifier? It is fine for a bit, but then your b___t and b___bs get good and sore, don't they? I swear I feel like I am going to turn into the color and pattern of my sofa soon- LOL! Ben has been nursing a lot lately, so I think he's either not feeling well or having an unexpected growth spurt at 8 weeks. Although, I know he has not been sleeping enough the last few days and maybe he is using me to calm himself down from being overly-tired.

goodness gracious !! Im pregnant with my 1st and I must admit I had no clue babies eat that long. I will b___stfeed as well but I have only seen babies getting bottlefed and are usually finished rather quickly. I can't imagine waking up at 4am and my baby wanting to latch on for 45 minutes or more possibly! Wont my arms go numb? haha I never heard of the nursing sling...i think im gonna look into that!!!

i think my little one must be a really effecient sucker then. he is almost 4 months old and he can empty out both sides inabout 15mins, and has been doing so for awhile now. I know that he is getting enough hindmilk because he was 17lbs at 3 months. when he drinks a bottle tho, it'll take him about a half hour to drink about 4.5-5 ozs.

It's funny, but lately he seems to be spending a little less time (25-30 minutes total) while feeding. Not always, but some of the time. Maybe he is becoming more efficient?

I think so, Christy. Renity used to take an hour or so to nurse - now, she's done in about 5 minutes, 10 if she's lazy.

I bet once he becomes more interested in the world around him and in playing, hanging out at the b___b won't seem so appealing- lol!

I'm with you Christy. My lil' guy (he's only 1 week old...so maybe that's why he wants b___b so much) but it takes on average 1 hour for him to be some what full. The last couple of nights it's been 2 hours. When he's awake he wants b___b, then he falls asleep, then if I move he wakes and is PO'ed and wants more b___b. We do that all day. :) It wouldn't be so bad if my nipples weren't blistered and b___stfeeding didn't feel as painful as labor! I'm hoping it gets better soon.

I have given up. After my daughter was 3 weeks old, I began expressing my milk during the day and nursing during the evening and night when I'm ready to sit and relax anyways. That way I would be able to get something done during the day. It was getting to the point where I dreaded nursing. Plus I was afraid that she wasn't getting enough milk because whenever she was awake, she wanted to nurse. And she has a nasty habit of always falling asleep while nursing. I was able to enjoy my time with her much more because I was no longer frustrated. I'm hoping that she will become a more efficient eater very soon! And once she gets out of that newborn stage, maybe she won't fall asleep as often (fingers crossed).

I too had a slow eater at first. I remember thinking that I'd have to allow an hour in the a.m. once I went back to work just for nursing. I don't remember exactly when it happened but all of a sudden he started being done after 15-30 minutes total. I think when they are really little they are #1 learning to nurse #2 sucking for comfort #3 sucking longer to bring in milk for one of their many growth spurts. My son is going on 9 months and I love the stage he's in right now but I'm already saying that my little guy is growing so fast. Cherish the moments!!
