Hi all. I am thinking about br___tfeeding but read that you aren't suppose to give your baby a pacifier. If not a pacifier, then what? Are there others out there who have br___tfed and used a pacifier with no problems? Thanks.

Pacifers can cause nipple confusion, like bottles can: "What is Nipple Confusion? It is a problem that arises when a b___stfed baby is given an artificial (rubber or silicon) nipple and must try to learn to nurse both from his mother's b___st and the bottle nipple. While seemingly similar, these two feeding methods require completely different mouth and tongue motions and swallowing skills." I would either not use one at all or at least wait until the baby is 4-6 weeks old and give it only when you're unable to comfort or nurse him. I've only given one of my bf a paci and we have had issues, but thankfully mild.

We gave our baby a dummy from day 2 with no issues whatsoever, and expressed milk in a bottle from day 8. There was no problem moving from b___st to bottle teat to pacifier. I haven't heard of any of my friends having any trouble etiher - i'd only read about it on the internet and it did scare me a bit, but like i said - there were no issues at all for my baby.

My boy is 11 days old, and was given a pacifer when he was 2 days old. I'm also b___stfeeding him and there seems to be no nipple confusion. I found that the "Tuk" pacifer works well too. That's what the hospital gave to me. Good luck

Between the pacifier and the bottle that the hospital gave my son he developed nipple confusion or at least a preference for the artificial nipples. It took hard work and a litter perserverence but at about three weeks old he was doing much better on the b___st. I had to take the paci from him (gave it back at about 2 months) wean him onto a shield and then onto the b___st along and almost constant b___stfeeding to build my supply back up. I would recommend holding off on the pacifier until at least a month. Your baby might not develop confusion, but then again it is not worth the risk!

My daughter had a paci at 10 days old for the first time, mostly because MIL insisted even though I didn't want her to have one - it was the beginning of a nightmare at least for us. MIL was with us for 5 days, and my baby more and more refused the b___st and would only take expressed milk in a bottle. i was SO upset and bawling my head off because I didn't think she wanted me anymore. Many times i went off to our room and cried on the bed while MIL fed baby with a bottle. After MIL left, it took nearly 3 days to get her back to the b___st. Then the paci got tossed out never again to reappear and she nursed like a champ for 15 months! yay!!!

let me add that all babies are different - some bf babies don't really care and aren't bothered by it, but from what we went through with our daughter, i'll never do the paci thing again.

My baby is 4 mos old. Im still exclusively b___stfeeding/pumping. I used a pacifier from day one with no problems. He is not very attached to it either he can go a day or two with out it. I do plan on weaning his pacifier in a couple of months. I just read an article that pacifier suckers are 3x more likely to have ear infections.

My lil one is a b___st baby. He started trying to suck that thumb so I gave him a pacifier. He takes it well but does not depend on it. Usually when he falls asleep it comes out. He only takes it when he goes to bed or is sleepy for a nap

My daughter takes a paci with no issues; she fought a bottle until I found a nipple that's shaped like her paci.

i tried giving my girl a pacifier when she was really young, like 2 days old and she liked it that day but we didn't give it to her regularly. and then when we tried to again she refused it. now she only wants the b___st and won't take the pacifier or bottle, which has made things difficult for me because i can't leave her for very long without me and i felt like i had to quit my job.

My little guy has had his pacifier since he wasn't even 24 hours old. I b___stfeed & supplement (mainly at night) with no confusion problems. He's a very good sucker. He's 2 weeks.

Mindi, yes I have had 3 children and used a pacifier with all 3 and nursed all three. Some babies like to suck even after they have nursed and been filled. There is a great pacifier available, recommended to me by a lactation specialist, that reduces nipple confusion because of the shape of the nipple. The shape of the nipple encourages the same tongue shaping required during b___stfeeding. Go to childmed.com and click on pacifiers and look for the "teal" soothie pacifier. My son loves it and it has even helped him continue to latch on to me properly, which was the reason for the lactation visit in the first place. My son is 2 weeks old, by the way.

My boy won't take a pacifier but takes a bottle no problem. We waited to give him a bottle until he was about 6 or 7 weeks he took right to it and went right back to the b___st. We tried a pacifier around 8 weeks to help his need to suck and he doesn't want it at all. He now sucks his hand to sooth himself. Its all up to your baby. My sisters youngest took a while to warm up to his pacifier and then would'nt give it up til he was 3 and a half. Ugh
