Supplementing Breastmilk W Formula

Do any of you br___tfeed mostly all the time but supplement with formula when you need a girls night out or to get away, and how does your baby handle getting formula only once in a while, I'm thinking of doing this, but using br___tmilk mixed with the formula.

Don't mix b___stmilk and formula. If you supplement with formula, mix it with water. My baby will not take formula at all - so I pump b___st milk, and give her that.

Hey Jamie, I've been pumping as well, but was told that if I mix the b___stmilk with the formula it will transition her into it better, but how does your baby refuse it, have you tried numerous times??

Jamie - December 2

I've tried it 3 or 4 times; each time, she screamed as though she were being poisoned. I suppose that if I did not give in and nurse her, she would take it out of sheer starvation, but I don't want to wean her. I was told that mixing b___stmilk and formula gives the baby too many nutrients and vitamins - essentially an overdose, and so not to do it.

Oh! I don't want to wean my little one either but just asked the doc about nights that I want to go out for more than what I can pump.

Just pump/express a little everday and freeze it. Once you have enough frozen you can enjoy your night out without baby. To thaw just put in a bowl of warm water and shake.

April, my lactation consultant told me to NEVER shake b___st milk...it breaks down the "good stuff" as she put it...lol

I have gone through my supply of expressd milk and my freezer is empty. I never pump to store anymore. Today was Blake's 6 month check up and I got a free sample of formula just to have as a back up. I do not plan on weaning him, but it will be nice to have around in case I want to have some time to myself. I would not recommend mixing b___stmilk with formula, I have read that you should not do this. Have someone else offer the bottle of formula otherwise the baby may refuse it.

yes...i do b___stfeed most of the time...i've been out only a few times and haven't been able to feed him...i have formula to supplement only when i don't have any b___stmilk pumped and all is fine. he gets b___stmilk for the most part though...he takes formula from a bottle just as well as he takes to the b___st, only when it's needed though...we have no problems with him. please do not mix formula with b___stmilk...that is not good for the baby.

To leahp!! I have the book "what to expect the first year" im not sure if you have heard of it, but on page 217 it says quote: "If you don't have enough expressed milk to make a complete bottle, no need to throw all that hard work away . instead, mix formula with the expressed milk to fill the bottle. less waste and your baby will be getting enzymes from the b___st milk that will help digest the formula better." but my best advice will also be that you ask your lactation consultant or the babys doctor.

i forgot to mention i do both formula and b___stmilk and i have mixed them both and my baby took it good. She also takes that formula once or twice a day im getting her used to it for later on.

Jamie - I read that lots of the good stuff gets killed when the milk is frozen. How else could you get the fat to mix? Jenn - DON'T DO IT! DON'T USE THE FORMULA! YOU DON'T PLAN ON WEANING BUT IF YOU USE THE FORMULA THEN YOU HAVE STARTED WEANING! I'm okay now. I'm just a LITTLE pro b___stfeeding.

Jamie - December 2

April, I stir it. It mixes just fine for me, and gets fewer air bubbles.

Formula tastes and smells bad. Babies that are used to b___stmilk which is much sweeter don't like it. It also makes the diaper smell awful! Use expressed b___stmilk if you can. Mixing the b___stmilk with "formula" is not a problem, and it will help with the taste problem if you don't have enough. That information about not mixing it is just to sell more formula.

Jenn... - December 2

I think it would be okay to mix **prepared** formula with b___stmilk. I think the issue is more that you should not make a bottle by mixing powdered formula and milk. So if you mix the powder in water and then add that to the b___stmilk that should be okay.

Jamie - My book says to swirl it. They don't say why though. I guess I had better stop shaking my b___st milk. Thanks!

I had to start supplementing with formula bc my daughter wasn't gaining enough weight...just make sure she feeds off you first before you give her formula and pump often so you don't lose your milk supply :) Luckily my daughter took to the bottle just fine and she happily feeds still from me too..
