When Breastfeeding Should Stop

On the topic of extended b___stfeeding, I notice that mothers tend to favour this but after talking about it with people, someone said that they heard on the show with Dr.Phil that it could be detrimental on the pscyhological child's well being which he was saying to a mother who was still b___stfeeding her 8 year old. So I think that maybe the whole idea of their gender and s_xual ident_ty development begins when they start to understand the world better. Its not that you condition them to think and act in a certain way but it is thier own psychological final thoughts on what they think of themselves. The whole idea about mothers bonding with thier children can be done in so many other ways and it is not that necessary to have the b___st skin contact to achieve this as much as its needed in infancy. They also mentioned that even animals don't nurse thier young tool old either and encourage them to grow up and hunt for food. I'm not telling anyone extended b___stfeeding is wrong but these points is something to think about when considering to care for children.

Dr. Phil is an idiot, in my opinion. :)

Yes, you can't compare the psychological effects of a 2 year old and an 8 year old..

But apparently, their s_xual and gender ident_ty begins during toddlerhood. By preschool age they are very aware of the differences and have formed their own thought of s_xuality (which s_x) and gender ident_ty(social learning on how to behave). So at which age would it be reasonable to say o.k its time for you to be weaned?

Even though the world average is supposedly two (although, I think that's more for countries that don't have an option) ....I would say no longer than 2. Even that, seems a bit long to me, but to each their own.

Hey, I'm not giving an opinion on extended b___stfeeding, other than my daughter will wean herself. But, in my opinion, Dr. Phil is an idiot. :-) And I mean that in the nicest possible way!

Sorry I meant to say someone pretending to be me.

when the child is all grown up....how long you b___stfed won't amount to a hill of beans. do what feels right for you and let everyone else think what they may.

I am a nursing mom of a daughter who will be turning 2 this December and we have had alot of luck and great benifits from it. The bond is incredable and I feel that it is well worth it. Do whatever makes you both feel comfortable and what works for you. I am also due to have a baby this Thursday and even though I pretty much dryed up and just have a little colostrum comming out she surprisingly looks very forward to that. Plus my daughter gets to nurse and feel the baby move which is kinda cool. Good luck!
