Hi! About 3 weeks ago I delivered a beautiful baby boy. My water broke and I labored for 24 hours on pitocin before the doctor told me I needed a C-section. It was a little disapointing but overall I was relieved to finally have the baby. Here are my questions:
#1 - I was awake for the delivery with an epidural and then put to sleep while I was st_tched up. I woke up as I was being wheeled into recovery and I remember being in incredible pain. My tummy felt like it was on fire. Also the epidural had mostly worn off. They hooked up some pain medicine by IV but it took awhile to get the pain back under control. Is this normal? (And I have a strong tolerance for pain)
#2 - I was told that the C-section was needed because of the disproportion of the size of my pelvis to the baby's head and that I would require repeat C-sections in the future. My son weighed 7lbs 14oz so he was averaged size and not big which means my pelvic bones are small. Has anyone gone on to successful VBACs after a report such as that?
Thanks, Em

I can't answer the second part of your question but as for the first it's not normal. Do you know why you were put under? Where there some complications with the epidural? Normally you are awake for the whole thing, and actually with my c-section they left the epidural in for 2 days to administer pain medicine. It's hard to explain, i wasn't numb like i was for the surgery but i wasn't in any pain either. I would talk to your doctor about it at your next appointment, i'm sure you have one comming up soon.

I was awake for the entire thing but I had staples rather than st_tches. The epi wore off a few hours later and I had to ask for meds every 4 hours when the pain returned! I am opting for a section this time as well, since its safer to the baby. Good luck.

yeah i am also curious why you were put to sleep...a spinal is better then an epi for a c section IMO..also there is a medicine called duramorph that you can have when you get a spinal and it helps control pain for 24 hrs and i think works really well! if you have another repeat ask for spinal and duramorph your experience will be different..

Thanks for your responses. I talked to an L&D nurse and found out I was not put to sleep, but was given something to relax me after the baby was delivered and fell asleep from exhaustion. She said most people fall asleep while they are being st_tched up if they've been through a long labor. I'll verify with my dr at my next appt. I'll also make sure the dr knows the epidural wore off too soon and next time I want a little more time for recovery. And I guess next time it will be planned and I can have a spinal. Thanks again.
