C Sections How Scared Should I Be

I had an emegency c-section, very welcome after almost 30 hrs of unproductive labor and a baby stuck in my pelvis. I did fine, I was walking within 12hrs of surgery and the most pain meds I took after were an ibuprofen 800 and 1/2 a vicodin. I think the worst part for me was I got really cold and was shaking because I was freezing, but in recovery they put a hairdryer type heater thing on me and warm blankets, they felt really good. I will say 6wks out I do have some tenderness in my back from where my epidural was, but I got my epi 1/2 way thru my labor and I must say the thing was way worth it. I felt so much better. I had a perfect pregnancy, no complications who'd have thought I'd have to have an emergency c-sec, I sure didn't, but now at least I know if I have any more kids I will just be scheduled for one and I am way okay w/ that. Good luck.

Some are rough, it IS surgery, so a little fear is natural and to be expected. I would wonder why you wouldn't be if you weren't nervous. Anyhow, if you are scheduled some of the pain is less, but look over all the stories good and bad and figure you will be somewhere in between. I had both v____al and c-sects and I won't lie, I think v____al birth is far easier, but your baby is breech so best to just ask a lot of q's and prepare as much as you can. Have help at home, real help, not visitors, and take your meds before you pain gets to you. Spinals are icky, but doable, I puked on the table (be aware that can happen) and had a rough recovery. But, all the kids are fine and we live to fight another day!!!

Oops, well you said you can't take pain meds, there are many alternative meds that can be used that provide some a___lgesia for pts. who can't take opioids (narcotics) for various reasons, ask your Doc. On our floor we give some meds that are actually used for depression and other conditions normally for those who are allergic or who have had addiction problems and are in recovery. Not saying its your case, just saying ask your Doc about alternative pain therapies. Good Luck!

I had the epidural for my surgery and they left it in for the 1st 24 hours, however when I pushed the b___ton to inject the drug it sprayed out on the bed. The second time this happened ,some hours later, I called for a nurse and I got a shot of something( in the arm). The next day I got nothing for pain (I'm in Japan) and it was okay. If you can get through the first day or two, it is very manageable. I should say- it was for me, anyway. Good luck. Try not to worry.

Don't be scared. The worst part is the feeling of them pulling inside you, and the recovery. Other than that, you've got nothing to worry about! It's easier than having a v____al birth, takes about 30 minutes, [mine was started at 9:00pm and my son was born at 9:25pm] it's very easy on your part!

I also had 2 v____al deliveries and 1 c-section with my 3rd due to the fact the baby was footling breech. Don´t be worried, the recovery isn´t so bad, but it depends from person to person. It took me 14 days before I got rid of the pain completely. However within 7 days I already felt less pain than during the first days.I had to take pain killers for 1 week, then it felt much better.I cannot imagine my pain if I didn´t take them. Perhaps you can take pain killers made of natural products?(such as plants)

They aren't too bad at all - it is more discomfort than pain. I ended up not taking pain relief as I din't feel like I needed it, although I do remember waking and thinking "OMG I'll never walk again!" It was more for fear of standing up straight. It is like you have the wind knocked out of you, and you feel very breathless. The recovery, for me was very very quick. I think my att_tude of "right, I missed seeing him born (and so on) so I ain't letting this slow me down". I refused pain meds, and just got on with it, and I really bel;ieved that helped me. It might not be the way to go for everyone though! The epidural is magic! I laboured naturally and ended up with an emergency c section. By this time my epidural had worn off and they couldn't get the spinal to work in me so needed to be put under a GA. This was because I'd laboured for 12 hours and the pain was intense - they'd given me syntocin to help speed up the contractions to get him come out (didn't work!!) and o they were mega! Howver, there is no reason yours won't work as yours will be scheduled before labour begins. I had to take some oral medicine before the spinal was attempted (Don't know what it was) and I brought that straight back - but I think that was becuase I was in labour and women in labour often vomit. I would strongly recommend that fear doesn't drive you to have a GA. I was so so gutted I missed my sons birth. I cry over this even now. I have no sensation of him leaving me, and for all intents and purposes they could have just wheeled me any old baby over - if it was for the fact he is the spitting image of me and my partner!! I would recommend being prepared for the emotional side. I physically couldn't change my baby's first nappy, nor lift him out of his cot when he cried the first night, nor latch him onto my b___st without help for the first 12 hours. This really really upset me.
