2 weeks ago I had a c-section. Two days later in the hospital I ended up with a fever and an infection somewhere (Dr's did not know where exactly). We had CT scans and x-rays looking for clots and anything... nothing was found. I spent a week in the hospital, finally the fever went away and I could go home on antibiotics.
So here I am and two days ago part of my incision opened and all this stuff started draining out. There was an infection I guess under my incision. So it is 4 cent deep and 7-8 cent. long. I have home health care coming 2 times a day to pack the wound. OUCH!
I guess my question is... is this normal? Does it happen often and what are the chances I will get worse? I am SO afraid of ending up back in the hospital and never getting back to normal and not being able to take care of my baby (my first and only baby and I have also NEVER been in the hospital for anything before this).
Anyone have any advice? Thank you...

I am so sorry you are ill, and that you had a not-so-rare complication of cesarean delivery. This is why I have ALWAYS warned against electing c-sections for no medical reason. I am not saying that is what you did. What did your doctor say to you? Is is MRSA? Did they test you for it? I suggest they culture your drainage, do not let them tell you it is not infected, it may well be. Good luck.

This was not an elected c-section my any means. I ended up being induced because of high blood pressure and then the 18 hour labor was making me sick... and I had 2 epidurals and neither of them worked, plus I only got to like 3 cent. and nothing was progressing after that. So that is how this c-section ended up taking place. Thank you for your reply. I am going to make sure I ask my Dr about the culture and all of that. I never thought to ask. Good question!

Oh Lisa, that's why I said I wasn't saying you chose this! I totally can relate to an unexpected c-section Are you feeling any better yet? Do you have any pus or a continued on-going fever? How's your BP? And last but not least, how is the beautiful baby you are going through so much for? Keep us posted, I really care how you are doing and hope you get well ASAP! Bless you and your family.

My BP is fine now and I have not had a fever since I left the hospital 8 days ago *knock on wood*! There was puss coming out but it seems to be not as much now, so I hope that is a good sign. Today I feel good. But that may be because my mom came back to town to help me out and I feel so much better knowing I have some help. It relieves so much anxiety right now. My husband and I live in NC and pretty much the rest of our families are in NY. So right now family is so important to me. And my little baby boy is wonderful. =) He has been great this whole time. I am hoping I can be well like him pretty soon. I just hope none of this gets worse or more problems start to pop up.

I had a c-section, and about two weeks after, my incision became infected, due to the hospital nurses staff. Hubby and I had to pack it, ok, more him than me, ourselves. Yes, ouch! It took about 2-3 weeks to completely heal and close! Be sure to keep it very dry, and let air on it as much as possible. I spent my days on the fold out couch with the baby, all the baby needs, the tv remote, magazines, and the laptop right beside me. I left the waist of my pants and underwear rolled way down, sorry if TMI. Just be sure to rest and follow dr's orders! good luck and congrats on the new arrival

Oh, I am so sorry you are going thru this. I went thru something similar, but I think your situation is worse. My incision opened up after my 2nd C last year, but not all the way thru into my abdominal cavity so I did not have to pack it. But my fat and muscle were exposed and it had to "heal from the inside out" for 7 weeks. It was painful to wear clothes, and it would weep blood and fluid all over the place. Then I had something called hypergranulation, where excess tissue grows during the healing process and I had this bloody red flap sticking through the incision that looked like a slice of pepperoni (gross, but true). Then that thing had to basically dry up and die on its own, which took forever. It sort of merged into the scar, making a lump. My scar is hideous, totally lumpy and mis-shapen. It is noticable thru a bathing suit, and I have consulted a plastic surgeon already.

My incision leaked real bad with my second c section-It never offically opened-but I had to fold up receving blankets and put them in my pants by my wound bc it was sooo bad. I had no idea that it would do that. hope all is well.

Hey Lisa, that is good that you are not feeling worsening fevers or infection! *Sigh*, hang in there kiddo. Glad you have some help now as rest and quality nutrition are necessary after any birth, any surgery and any infection and you have ALL THREE! I absolutely LOVE NC! Growing up my family had a beach house right on the Outer Banks (Nag's Head area) and that is one of my favorite places on Earth:~) I have such great memories of Jockey's Ridge and the beauty of that area. I was born and raised in Northern Virginia and now live in Oregon. I was the head coach for our Special Olympics gymnastics team that went to Raleigh-Durham for the '99 World Games so there are nothing but fantastic memories for me of NC. May God bless you and continue to help you heal so you can enjoy this most precious time with your new baby son.
